Omaha, Neb. - A woman missing from Pottawattamie County was found safe Tuesday in Omaha, and is not pregnant, as she led her family to believe, authorities said. Stephanie Ehlers also told investigators that she had no plans to return home to her husband.
Ehlers, 34, of rural Minden, was found about noon after a letter carrier saw her car near a house and called police.
"She told investigators that her intent was to get a divorce and go to Texas and start her life again," said Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jefferey Danker. "She said she was going to notify her family when she got down there."
Danker said Ehlers told authorities she had been pregnant in September, but had miscarried two to three weeks later. Ehlers said she never went to the doctor again.
Ehlers, who told others she was due to give birth any day, was reported missing by her husband, Jason Ehlers, who last saw her Saturday evening. He said that when he returned home about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, his wife was gone, along with her purse and 1989 red Chevy Cavalier.
Danker said Ehlers spent Saturday night in a hotel, and then went to the house in Omaha, which belonged to a male friend.
"She said he wasn't a boyfriend - just a friend," Danker said.
Tuesday afternoon, Jason Ehlers said he still had not talked to his wife. Ehlers went to Omaha after his wife was found, but he was sent home after she refused to emerge. Stephanie Ehlers said she would speak only to authorities.
The idea that his wife wanted a divorce was news to him, Jason Ehlers said.
"Until I talk to her, I don't know what's going on," he said. "We hadn't talked about getting a divorce."
He said he had been convinced up until Tuesday that his wife was still pregnant and didn't know why she would lie about it. He acknowledged that he hadn't accompanied his wife to any doctors' appointments, but said "she had a little belly on her."
The two-day search for Ehlers - which involved hundreds of missing-person fliers, news reports and a canvass of the area by airplane - quickly drew national attention, with Jason Ehlers appearing on Fox News with Greta Van Susteren and CBS's "Early Show." Stephanie Ehlers' disappearance came within two weeks of the disappearance of so-called "runaway bride" Jennifer Wilbanks, who fled from her Georgia home just days before her wedding, sparking a heavily publicized search. She too, was found unharmed days later.
Jason Ehlers said his wife had told family members she had an appointment Monday in Council Bluffs, where labor was to be induced. But when relatives contacted her doctor there, they learned an appointment was never scheduled, Jason Ehlers said.
A family friend, Troy Plambeck, said he had seen Ehlers in town a week ago, and she in was a good mood. Ehlers has two children from a previous relationship who live with her parents in Omaha.
"What you saw was an excited, expecting mother," Plambeck said. "She told us she had just had an ultrasound, and the baby was doing just fine."
No charges are expected to be filed against Stephanie Ehlers, and officials said there were no signs of violence in her marriage, Danker said. "There really weren't any laws that she has broken," he said. "It just would have been nice if she had told us."
