Lightening bugs...I love them! I was talking to someone from California. He informed me that they DO NOT HAVE LIGHTENING BUGS THERE! It never occurred to me that there were parts of the country/world that didn't have these cool little critters. I saw my first two last night. Either I saw two, or just one that was moving really fast. Anyway, that is how I know that summer is on the way. I got so excited!
Like John Candy said in "The Great Outdoors"..."Everybody likes lightening bugs. Their butts light up".
Do you have lightening bugs where you are?

I love them too. I used to catch them, take them and let them loose in my bedroom, and catch the ones I could again. I used to catch them with my kids too when they were small. I still find myself reaching out to grab one as it flies by.

Years ago, we were visiting relatives in Missouri, there was a huge electrical
storm and my sister ran in the room exclaiming "Daddy, daddy, come quick,
there's sparks on the camper" and all the adults rushed out thinking power
lines were down or something... and it was just lightning bugs, she'd never
seen them before! (She was about 4 I think!)
Don't have any here, but I really think they're cool.
And I'm sure glad I'm not a species that has a butt that lights up!
(Oh, the horror!)
;)

They arrive here around mid-May.
It's fun to sit on the porch in the evenings and watch them.

I love them too, but it reminds me that those other little creepy crawly things are coming. Spiders more than anything (already had the house sprayed just in case) and June Bugs (dont know their real name). I could do without them all together. They are huge which may not be your idea of huge, but around dime size, hard back and when they land on you, you feel their little legs actually grip you. It doesn't hurt at all, just freaks me out. You go to step on one, and it crunches, which also freaks me out. So, I could sure do without the other critters that come with lightening bugs.

Chattergal, that was a really great story. Thanks for sharing it!
I remember lightning bugs at the farm where I spent summers as a kid. *sigh* Now I can't wait to get back out there so I can catch a few and show my son!

Chattergal, I am a bit too sensitive...some might say. I have to tell you though...your story made me get all misty. I think that is a first for me here at the FG. Maybe it struck a bit close to home. Thanks so much for sharing. I'm glad I posted this goofy thread...just for that!
