Paul Nicholls Exclusive: AON to become the Betfair Denman : The Team : Paul Nicholls

With a life size bronze statue commissioned for King kauto at Haydock Park, In honour of the one they call 'The Tank', The Aon Chase has been renamed 'The Denman Betfair Chase'.

Quite right too.... The racing world does not give tributes lightly....





The plan is for Denman to parade before the race on February 11, and hopefully the racegoers and punters that have followed and supported him throughout his career will turn out to see him on the day. I only hope that they, and the horse, don't remember the last time he ran in the race.

Funny.... I will always remember the Aon for the day at Incredible short odds of 1/6, Denman took exception to AP McCoy replacing Sam Thomas as his Jockey and dumping him In the ditch half way round allowing that naughty, pesky horse 'What A Friend' to win.....

It's absolutely right and fitting that If any race was going to be named after him, It had to be at the race course of Newbury where he achieved his greatest feat and what the pundits still claim as the greatest example of steeplechasing history.

Any doubts.... watch this race.... the average weight on the day was 8 stone.. Denman, handicapped to the max carried 11 stone 12 lbs... His ran the race true to his trademark, leading from the front and running the finish out of his rivals.... hence The Tank
