There is but one fundamental source of all evils, one common cause for all sorrows, one substratum for all misery in the world and that is IGNORANCE. Ignorance appearing in all shapes and different forms but all stemming from from the deepest root.THE IGNORANCE OF ONES OWN SELF.

I agree so completely I'll add that understanding both your light and dark sides is important in eliminating suffering. Denial/fear of any aspect of self knowledge makes for trouble.

In which culture are we ingorant of oneself? It would have to differ across the board. Each culture has a different way of defining itself and indeed it's individuals, and individualistic ideas

I'd say all of them and separating oneself from their culture is integral to self knowledge.

It's an arduous task but not impossible. Some people have managed to completely detach from reality so I think attaching to it ought to be just as possible.

I think there is a difference between what should be two working definitions of "ignorance".

Ignorance of human empathy is the far greater "evil" than to simply not know how to install a toilet or a transplanted heart, both of which can be accorded to us by another...

What exactly Is Ignorance.

Ignorance Is usually limited to those pseudo beings who think that If others do not share their Interests, then they are Ignorant when In fact, It Is the psuedo being who Is the Ignorant.

As an example, I have a young lad as a neighbour who wouldn't win any literary prizes and struggles to string a sentence together but Is he Ignorant ? I don't think so, not when half of the village queues up for his advice when their car needs repairing.

The view that others are Ignorant Is only In the eye of the psuedo arrogant who believes their pseudo Identity Is somehow superior when truth be known, the 'Ignorant' are laughing at them for their Ignorance.

Re: What exactly is ignorance.

Oscar, I do not consider your mechanic friend as ignorant. He is not weighed down with desires, attachments, greed, hatred, anger etc. He just does his job. Probably closer to reality than most of us.

Only the arrogant believe they are superior.
