Those were wonderful photos. You'd be surprised, Nevada hasn't changed a whole heck of a lot, there's a surprising amount of open and undeveloped land that looks just like some of those photos. Southern Utah has a lot of national parks where you'll still see those amazing sandstone formations.

Isn't that a map making term? A lot of that territory was Indian Country and hadn't been explored by whitey.

Apologies, I was apparently thinking of "charted." Oscar is correct, you should probably contact the author of that article to quibble the meaning of chartered. It's important and I'll be waiting on hooks and needles for your return.

That's why I asked what she meant by it. The world's too full of bloody illiteracy to propagate even more of it.

I copied the link from the newspaper.... I pasted It here and that's what came up.....
Why do you have to trash threads with this pedantic nonsense?
These are the first two lines when you open the link.....
These remarkable 19th century sepia-tinted pictures show the American West as you have never seen it before - as it was charted for the first time.
The photos, by Timothy O'Sullivan, are the first ever taken of the rocky and barren landscape.

I sought information about a novel use of the word "chartered" which I'd never seen before. I had no idea it was a misprint. Or should I simply assume oscar doesn't give a damn about checking what she posts?

If you check back, I didn't know it was a typo. I asked for an explanation of a usage new to me. Strive and fete, on the other hand, were simply ungrammatical primary school howlers. That something passes a spellchecker doesn't make it acceptable English.

No difference at all. You just got It wrong,
Spell checker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It doesn't matter what you prefer. Preferring does not make It English or correct.
Perhaps you should try that spell checker yourself.
