Life without the Internet and phone....

Two days ago, due to an oversized truck taking out some overhead cables, we lost our BT landline and Internet....

Panic gripped the Oscar household.

We stared at two blue lights on our hub for hours mentally willing the third blue to begin flashing.

Late last night after we had busied ourselves around the house we asked each other what were we going to do.

I said In jest ' I suppose we'll have to talk to each other'....

It's not that funny Is It and It really does make you think eh ?

Having just had an evening out whilst I recanned my desktop I can see where you're coming from.

At least I had something to do and no-one to talk to.

Does BT not give you free access to their national wireless network while their lines are dead?

NO :-(

This damn'd case put the power supply directly over the CPU fan, blocking most of the airflow, and has no fans to blow air through the case - I'm going to have to make some serious changes if it's to be usable.

It wasn't a simple case, as I understand It.... Things had to be re-cabled up there and everything was dead.

No need for the tinsnips - it's running without half the tin it was born with just to keep the right side of sixty.

I'll be glad when the new board arrives (again).

Gawd - I'd forgotten that one.

Three weeks a year on the boat without even a television and I'm fine - don't miss it at all.

An evening in the flat without a connection and I'm barking.

Says it all, really.

Things got done. The sort of things you put off because you are usually glued to your laptop and have no time to do them.

True. Or you can read a book, work in the yard, take a walk, dance naked to music from a transister radio...you know...that sort of thing.

Now that's the sort of verbal imagery which shouldn't be abroad at two thirty in the morning, who knows what psychic damage it could cause.

I am about to go for a few weeks sailing in the Maritimes. We meet up in Boothbay, Maine and head up the coast. We have radio and satnav, but the computers and cell phones will remain in Boothbay.

I am looking forward to being detached for a while.

Since I rely on the Internet for my work, I try not to be without. When at home, I have fiber optic DSL to the house. When traveling, I have a small dome on the roof of my road vehicle for sat internet. If all else fails, I can tether my cell phone to my laptop.

I have to admit though, that the idea of being completely cut off from all communication on a vacation sounds good - as long as it is my choice, of course. :)

When they had finished the work, the engineer called at our home to check we were up and running. He was telling us how plain nasty some people get when they lose connection.

It's surprising how much we rely on the net. My husband was In a real spin because he had bids on Items on E bay that finished while we were out of service. It really worried him that he couldn't acknowledge the buyers.

It's mobile phones that are my pet hate. I'd gladly throw mine In the river. I hate being that contactable or should I say people expecting me to be Instantly contactable.

There's an app for that! :) It allows you to set up different modes. In each mode, there is a select group of people who can call you and everyone else goes straight to voicemail. My voicemail gets transcribed and I get a gentle bing to tell me that I have one and can then read the transcript quietly. Sometimes I just set the mode where no one can get through.

I am the same. I work out of my home 60% of the time, and travel the other.

I just had a runaround with my service provider. the connection was terribly intermittent, and unreliable. My VPN crashed so often, I could get nothing done for two weeks without driving 25 miles each way to the local office, and borrowing a desk from one of the TAC guys.

They kept telling me it must be the wiring in the house, and would send a tech out, who would tell me the line was good. he/she could find no problem. IT would work for the rest of the day, and the next morning, crash and burn.

Then, one day, my connection was up for a whole day.

After three days, I dared turn on my VPN, It ran for a week without incident.

I later found out they were adding new line and a new head end near my terminal, and apparently couldn't just tell me the thing was going to not be reliable for a couple of weeks. I would have just spent those two week down at the office.

I realized just how wired I am, now.

several of us got to talking over beers at Oscar Blues, and came up with this sailing trip.

We will be so out of touch, the seagulls won't find us.

I expect the first day to be a bit of a jones, but we plan to pull into Camden about dinner time and there will be lobster and beer to soothe our souls.
