Has anyone ever had food poisoning? This one time in the Dominican I thought I'd be brave and try the goat as part of a meal. I was violently ill all night...whew..
Anyone else? Tell me your experiences....

i used to do a lot of SCUBA, spearing fish, catching lobsters, etc. and eating tons of fresh raw oysters too. got a bad one once and was so sick i prayed for death to intervene. there's a common bacteria in caribbean waters that is carried by certain fish, causes ciquatera, a horrible untreatable disease that causes pure torture for months and months, not just days. bacterium from the ocean are aneorobic, they do not respond to the usual antibiotics. oops, sorry, i digress! ......
FISH POISONING
* The commonest form of fish poisoning that occurs in the Caribbean area is called ciquatera.

Yes, a few times. Worst was when I ate some rye crackers that tasted
just fine but I think had ergot growing on them. Was my theory. So
bad I had to go to the emergency room!
Usually if I do get something I'm pretty fast at recovery thankfully enough.
I stay away from lettuce at fast food places, on the rare occasions when
I go...
Went to a wedding once where the food was left out on warming tables
for an hour while wedding photos were taken and all the guests were made
to wait... I decided to just have a couple things (bread?!?!?) I was sure of
and I didn't get sick and many others did!

I couldn't imagine feeling that way for more than a day!!! Good Lord! I once had food poisoning from Mc Donalds as well. It was from a Mc Chicken. I haven't eaten there since. (Not only for that reason).
I recently watched Super Size Me. That movie could turn anyone off fast food.

I was attending a meeting in Boston, went out with the guys for dinner and got hold of some oysters. Oh Boy, sick for three days. Sat on the toilet in the hotel and threw up in the bathtub.

Chicken salad sandwich when I was pregnant. I was sure I was going to miscarry. People have said "I think I have food poisoning" and I assure them they don't. If you get it...you KNOW. It felt like I was turning inside out.

My horror story starts off by My eating PIZZA, with one half that had "MEATBALLS"!
I ate the half with Meatballs, my Wife ate just the cheese side. During the night I woke up scratching, big welts of pimples all over my arms, legs, back & chest. I scratched them so bad that they were bleeding, I finally went to the E/R and they took me in right away, ahead of the others waiting because they saw I was so bad! Anyway two E/R Doctors said it was something I ingested, & I know it was from the nasty tasting Meatballs on my half of the PIZZA the night before! They made me take Benedryl for a week & that in turn caused me to get a UTI, that lasted for several days. Then that spread into my lower parts causing extreme swelling. Needless to say, I was in excrusiating pain & discomfort that lasted for over "TWO" months!!! :-5
(Side note: I Don't eat PIZZA with Meatballs anymore!!)

I was a corporate chef for about ten years so here's some info for you:
There are two kinds of "food poisoning"
1. Food Intoxication - if the food has been kept at a room temperature for long enough, bacteria begins to grow at an alarming rate. These bacteria are feeding and, just like you, giving off waste products. Now if you cook your food well, you'll kill off the living bacteria, but their waste will still be in the food, cooking doesn't destroy that.
If you have this kind of food poisoning, you will feel ill immediately after eating. About 20 - 30 minutes after you eat, you will get violently sick and throw up as if your stomach wanted to jump out of your chest. But, and this is important, after you get all the toxins out of your system, you will feel much better. By the next day you should be fine.
2. True Food Poisoning - If the food gets infected and it doesn't get cooked enough to klll the bacteria, Now you have LIVE bacteria in your system. This is the truly dangerous kind of food poisoning and can KILL the weak, old, extremely young or infirm. You will be sick for days and may even be hospitalized .
My mentor chef used to tell me, "You may think your job is no big deal, just cooking food, but never forget, if you do it wrong, someone could die."

Cancun - 25 years ago. I ate fruit off a sidewalk stand that had been peeled and washed in contaminated water. I was sick for 2 days and thought I was going to die. To make matters worse - the hotel I was in had bad plumbing and the toilet could not handle my illness. The hotel finally called a doctor for me and he gave me something to calm my stomach and bowels.
