Here's one for you.

Do you think that people are different because of the area they live In ?

For example.... I have always believed ( through experience ) that folk from the North of England are far friendlier than those In the South.

Absolutely.

People in the US southwest are far more friendly than people in the northeastern states.

I have to say that I did see a difference when I visited Austin, Texas and then later NY....

The Texans were certainly far more laid back I noticed.

I'm just curious as to what makes one region so different to the next.

Is the personality of a region different because of the people that choose to live there? Is it tradition in the region? Is there something about a region that influences the behavior and attitudes of those who live there?

During my travels I stopped for awhile at a nice little town in Montana. I remarked to one of the local folks how mellow the town seemed to be. He told me that the people that lived there spent so much energy fighting nature for survival that they didn't have much energy left over to fight amongst themselves.

I have noticed that areas where folks have to dress up and wear suits for their work tend to be much more uptight than where they wear jeans.

I'd agree with you there, it's something about the south east of england in particular, it's a running joke if you say hello to someone and they don't reply they are probably from the south east of england whereas those from the north you can stand talking to as if you have been friends for years. I think it's tribal, the north viking/saxon/celt ancestry the south east less so where the normans got a stronger grip. . Bet if you looked at regions in the states where people are acknowledged as friendly you will find a lot of scots/irish immigration at one time or another. My theory Could be a load of bollocks though I'd have troubl backing it up.

If the Scots/Irish immigration came into the US Southwest via Mexico, you might have a point.

No question about them being different because of the area they live in. They are decidedly different. People living in NYC are WAY different from those living in Topeka, Kansas, not only in manner of speech, but in manners, diet and attitude.

People living in the Southern states of the U.S. are much more friendly and open than those living in the Northeast.

On the other hand, would you care to guess how many times I have been stopped and had my road vehicle searched while driving the back roads in the southern states?

You were stopped I am sure, because of your license plates being out of state. That is always a trigger for different state police patrols. Let's get them damn Yankees.

Why would that trigger a traffic stop? do americans not travel out of their own states or something?

In some areas there is a "not from around here" or "not like one of us" syndrome.
