Why Is It that BBC 1 and BBC 2 Is taken up now mostly by Tennis ?
I understand that we all like different things but Is the Tennis out of proportion ?
If I want to watch horse racing ( one of the biggest Sport Industry's In the country) , I am limited to Channel Four Racing and that's providing they cover the days racing. If I want extra, I have to pay out to subscribe to Sky Sports. Although the BBC do cover Royal Ascot, this is a few days a year In whole.
I don't actually mind. I understand not everyone wants to see horse racing on TV every day so I am happy with Channel Four coverage and Sky Sports although I have to pay for that.
So why, If horse racing devotee's can be understanding In coverage of their sport, do we have to have both channels with hours and hours of Tennis when we are not Interested In It.?
It's the same with football and Euro and world cups.
I can't even begin to think about the Olympics. :-5

The reason is that your Horse Racing is of interest to those in your country whereas Tennis, Olympics etc. is of International Interest and will draw a much larger viewing audience.

I seem to remember hearing a lot about Wimbledon, lately. Reckon that has tied up the channels a bit.
When we lived in the Raleigh North Carolina area, during the college Basketball season there were constantly ACC Basketball games pre-empting the scheduled TV programs. ACC Basketball was LIFE in that region.
Here in Colorado, while there are some colleges with passable teams in the NCAA, seldom does a game cause programming changes.
(NCAA = National Collegiate Athletic Association)
ACC = Atlantic Coast Conference - of the NCAA, THE college athletic division. No teams in any other conference rate a mention in North Carolina)

Wait until the Olympics, there will be plenty of sports on TV then.
I don't care for tennis, but many enjoy watching it. World Cup, oh yes. Those are always good games to watch, a great final matchup is coming.

oscar;1398062 wrote: Why Is It that BBC 1 and BBC 2 Is taken up now mostly by Tennis ?Because it's Tennis Month. The French Open, Queens and Wimbledon. You'd be hard pressed to find any tennis on either channel other than occasional highlights during the other 11/12ths of the year. I doubt whether both channels are showing matches simultaneously, either. Maybe they do and I'm wrong, I don't have a TV, it's a redundant device which has caused more damage to humanity over the last fifty years than war, drugs and terrorism combined.

I'm aware of that and there are days when both channels are showing different matches on different courts. Tonight we have a break on BBC1 as there's 3 hours of Football Instead.
I don't mind... I have Sky Discovery and can go and watch the programme about Russia's wildlife for example or the crime channel.
My point Is that not everyone has Sky and not everyone cares about Tennis or Football. Thus I think the coverage Is excessive.
Besides, It Interferes with Eastenders and that's not on.

That's exactly my point !!!!
What's wrong with limiting the Tennis to BBC 2 or limiting the Football to BBC2 leaving the two main channels for normal broadcasting?
If someone cares enough about tennis, football or even horse racing, and want to see every match morning non and night, then they pay for Sky Sports like I have to because Channel Four Racing does not cover every course every day. That's the price I have to pay for wanting results from every track. I don't expect three channels to broadcast every race for me so why should people without Sky and more Importantly, people who have no Interest In Tennis or Football, have It rammed down their throats on three channels?

Oh come on, that's one BBC channel and one commercial channel, it's not BBC1 and BBC2. Locking both BBC channels with sport isn't on, I agree, but that's not what happened here. They're competitors.

I hear ya Julie,
I wish that I was into sports, but I'm not. I love certain radio programs...listen 24/7, and TV shows. They are constantly being interrupted by sports shows and advertisements.
I don't mind when there are big games like the Yankee and Giants or big hockey and tennis games, but when my shows are pre-empted by college football on both the radio and tv, I'm so annoyed. Jeez, even the internet is full of advertisements. I also have a million channels on cable and all of them have advertisements. It's sickening for sure.
I'm getting to a point now where I only listen to my fav radio shows on the podcasts while I'm on the net. It's wonderful to listen to the shows without interruptions.
But, alas, advertisement pay the bills for the programming and cater to the needs of big business.....Horse racing is not in the cards unfortunately.

The source of the confusion is the turnip in the corner, theia.
eta: for clarity please let me point out that the turnip in the corner isn't, and was never intended to be, a reference to oscar.

I just came home for lunch and this Is the schedule for today...
BBC1 .. 1.30 to 6pm Wimbledon
BBC2....11.30 to 3.45 "
BBC2....5.45 to 8.00 "
8.00 pm to 9.00 Highlights
The only alternative If you have no Sky Is Dickinson's Real Deal' where I'd rather eat fresh horse vomit that watch that man grin and gurn at the camera.
Seriously Theia.... Sky Is well worth the money.

I know, I watch the Biography Channel when I'm babysitting my youngest granddaughter. I've got freeview but, incredibly, there still isn't much to watch when other channels are showing sport! I find myself a quarter of the way through a Lewis that I've already watched :wah:

We have the free view also but like you say, It's full of repeats.
I don't watch a lot of TV until late at night except my Easties and Corrie but due to Peter's health he does watch a bit during the day. At least with Sky he can watch Aircraft Investigations to his hearts content and get decent fishing channels on Sky sports.

It could be worse... If rain stops the tennis, they may wheel out Cliff Richard to sing or let Sue Barker waffle for hours.

Might get Cilla Black to sing which would be a nightmare! Call the midwife is a series set in the fifties of a world which has changed beyond recognition.

Not bad at all. 74 years since we last had a British player in the Wimbledon Mens Final and now we have another. Congratulations to Andy Murray. He may be the underdog on Sunday but his getting there pleases me.

The too much bit stems from the numbers of games being played in the first rounds, I expect. It applies only to the first week of Wimbledon - it doesn't happen with the French or Queens - and once the rush of matches is over it stops. The entire double-channel tennis thing occupies perhaps twenty hours a year at most.

I'm still trying to grasp the enormity of today's mens doubles final. A Brit and a Dane, entered on a wildcard, who've only played together for their last three events and with no pretensions whatever to world-class competition, just won. There's never before been a wildcard winner of a mens doubles final in Wimbledon history. The last Brit to win in a mens doubles final there was before the war. "Well done" scarcely does them justice.
Mr Murray now has something to live up to tomorrow.

For those with no clock or sense of timing, Mr Murray is about to try wearing down the Swiss chap around now. Pay attention, this match counts for rather more than the European Championship or the Olympics.

Sue Barker appears to wish she was in the locker room at the moment. That's rugby, Sue. Tennis players are far too well behaved.

I note there's no tennis on TV today.
As for "Is there too much sport on TV", you ain't seen nothing yet. We'll have weight-pushers and the synchronized javelin all too soon, for all too long, and I bet that'll be multi-channel too.
