I was In Boots today and there was a woman pestering folk to buy a new face cream.

Told her I'd take the sample and use It on my husbands scrotum.... If It gets the wrinkles out of that, I'll buy It.

Why not just say no thanks and walk past or completely ignore them if they don't take the hint. I have little sympathy for those who can't get away from sales people, having said that my wife is politer than me I have on occasion had to grab her be the arm , said sorry we don't have time for this and dragged her away for which she has duly thanked me. Trust me on this that wouldn't work if she wanted to listen to the sales pitch. She is a bit of a sucker for door to door people as well.

I was In sales for years and we were taught to overcome objections. We were trained that your average punter would say No three times before giving In. The art was to then ask them questions that would force a Yes.... Then they had nowhere to go when you went for the sale.

They do It In stores and I'm convinced they've had the same mentor as myself for I recognise the pattern.

That's why a one liner put down Is more cost effective than losing 15 minutes of your time by them trying to close you down.

Sainsbury's Is the worst for these people. Every time I go there Is a stall of some description trying to force you to take a sample. There was one yesterday who stopped me with a sample of cider. Along with a withering look, I just said ' Do I look like an alcy ?Nuff said.

I am polite by nature (or nurture) and am very patient. I bought this here machine that I is posting on from a large electrical department store. I researched before hand what I wanted, taking into consideration, need and budget. When I was confronted by the over eager sales assistant, I took a step backwards and told her exactly what I wanted to buy. She went into a pre-defined, well practise pitch, asking me my requirements, what I wanted the laptop for, what my usual internet security was, blah blah blah. I told her 3 times that I wanted "THAT ONE !" and it went through one ear and out the other. I told her calmly that I was prepared to walk out empty handed if she didnt shut up and sell me the damned laptop. She then made me wait 15 minutes while it was sourced from the back

Yep, well practiced...

We used to do It...

The customer would make their choice but we would force them Into the 'Yes' mode by asking :

But you like the more expensive model Yes?

So If the price was right, you'd prefer the more expensive model Yes ?

So If I could offer you a discount on that more expensive model, you'd consider It over your choice Yes?

Let me see what I can do for you....

This Is why two years ago my husband went to Comet to replace our fridge freezer. Instead of the standard we had chosen from the catalogue at home, he had delivered a double American style In metallic silver with drinks dispenser In the door which then required us to change the kitchen just to get It In.. But as he said.... you get all that for just £ 120 more than the standard one we chose... Groan
