I only collect the tops, not the pens. I get them from all over the place and friends send them to me. The collection is getting to large for me now and it's time to move them on.
Thinking of something else to collect

New Covent garden comes to mind
I did once have an extensive collection of toffee wrappers but one warm day I found they had all stuck together. Had to burn them

I completely fell apart for a week or two. I got through it with my next edition of collecting. Anything with a hole in it.
219 different items.
Polo mint owned and sucked by a minor celebrity, doughnut ( though I had to dispose of that after a couple of weeks ) a nose ring from a champion breeding bull and my personal favourite, a smoke ring blown by my uncles King Edward cigar, preserved in aspic

I know how you feel Snowfire.... my collections are taking up too much room also.
It started with the nets that hold Brussell Sprouts. I found that varying weight of BS and varying stores offered different sizes and different coloured nets. I have 423 at the moment and did consider sewing then all together to make a trawler net. My most prized net of the collection was the gold net offered by Sainsbury's one Christmas. I do have some nice blue Tesco samples and a minature green Morrisons sample. Some go on e bay for 6 pence each but I've never seen an entire collection as big as mine.
I also have a large collection of sod.... not just any old sod but sod taken from various places that mean something to me. My most prized piece of sod, I dug up from The Goldstone Ground In 1997 after Brighton and Hove Albion played their last match and the most sentimental sod Is the turf that Kauto Star walked upon In the 2011 King George Stakes along with the sod from the pre-parade ring at Newbury race course after Denman had walked upon It. Another piece of sod I acquired was from my neighbours lawn that I dug up..... no reason.... I just don't like him. In all I have 612 pieces of sod and am looking for a small holding to rent to store them.

I know of a small quarry which would house all your sods and would show them off to their best. With adequate trenching, the public would be able to view in comfort

That's a damn good Idea... I'm sure we could even charge a small entrants fee to visitors.
As for your pen top collection... have you thought of exhibiting them ? The Tate Modern may have some exhibition stands going for first time showers.
I also have another collection of watch batteries. My most prized exhibit Is the battery I took out of Nick Griffins watch when he went swimming In the hotel we were staying In. I decided after my collection reached 278 that I would limit the collection to watch batteries exclusively for Far Right members. I'm after the battery from Geert Wilders watch but this proving a little difficult to acquire.
My husbands collection of Hienz soup labels are stored In scrap books In out loft carefully preserved In clingfilm. His most collectable Is a Pea and Ham limited edition that Heinz released In 1948.

You know what would be exciting? Placing each pen top into a square of sod and then artfully arranging them on a public building. I'm not sure how you could get them to stick, maybe someone here has a collection of used wads of gum they could contribute.

Funny that cos I did once collect my gum and had a gumball the size of an average mans head, in fact I modeled it to look like Boutros Boutos Ghali, the former Secretary General of the United Nations, using a runcible spoon

That's a co-Incidence because after recieving a Christmas gift from a friend who worked on the Deli counter of a used cheese-wire, I thought It'd be Interesting to to acquire more cheese wires. Friends and family would acquire them for me on their travels and the best was from the Deli counter In Bloomingdale's New York and It's alleged that It was the very cheese wire that sliced some Parrano cheese for Bruce Willis while he stopped off In a break from shooting Diehard 111.... Trouble was, by last year I had so many cheese wires that I also made a model out of them. I Intertwined them Into a bust of Desmond Tutu. After covering the framework with Papier-mâché local small children used the head to make a Guy for Bonfire night.

Boutros Boutros Ghali would have been a fine exhibit had it not been attacked with a spade in a fit of rage, when a power cut ensued when a penalty shoot out was drawing to a climactic end in the England v Germany European Championship semi - final 1996.
The gumball was refashioned into Shane McGowan of the Pogues in one foul swing of a Spear and Jackson

Mt brother also fashioned a crude Eiffel Tower from nothing but discarded bird nest twigs and ear wax. In fact It was exhibited In the local church hall and some of the local monks thought It highly enough to pay homage to It every fourth Tuesday night.

" resemble a one earred bat "
Perhaps this bat would be interested in my earring collection. I don't have pairs, I have onesies. They were found discarded at shopping malls, places of employment, etc. Lost to the world but for a discerning eye. They are up for sale for half price.

Now that's funny because I myself very nearly got Into collecting onesies.
It all started after I found a small gold hoop In the back of a taxi. The driver assured me It must have come from his previous passenger, Dame Thora Herd who he had just dropped off at The Hackney Empire to do her rendition of ' Down In The Sewers' by The Stranglers. Apparently It went down a storm although some Stranglers fans read the billboard Incorrectly and stormed the building.... I digress..
Then came a cheap plastic earring I found In The George section of Asda which was no doubt discarded by a local chav because there was a trace of a brass blonde hair extension still attached to It.
My sister In law did claim that she had found a onesie after a pitch Invasion belonging to Osvaldo César Ardiles but I think she was just making It up.
Some years later I travelled to Tunisia for a holiday and during my excursion my camel sicked up what appeared to be a silver stud although It was difficult to know weather It was an ear stud or nose stud given the amount of vomit on the day trip.
