In the Vati Leaks scandal, the Pope's ex-butler is now standing trial for leaking information. He is The Holy Whistleblower.

Apparently the pope can be bribed.

How does that work, where the judge, prosecutor, defense attorney, and accused all work for the same "company"?

The Butler, Gabriele, now says he didn't steal the papers, he is only guilty of betrayal. He claims he used the office photocopier in plain sight and only leaked copies of the documents.

In the Vatican court they don't record every word said, the court reporter writes down summaries as provided by court president. This has resulted in parts of Gabriele's testimony being left out and other embellishments added. The president decided that Gabriele said he loved the pope as a son would when no such thing was uttered. Gabriele was read back the summary of his testimony and given a chance to correct a few things but never got to hear the final summary for approval and portions of his testimony were cut from the reports.

Interesting court. Kind of shows some parallels to how the bible was recorded.

The butler should be careful as to his choice of words. In my reading of history, being accused of betraying the pope or the Vatican hasn't often had a happy ending.

The pope is expected to pardon him but Ratzinger used to be the head of the residual Inquistion section of the church so... ya never know. He might oil up a burning stake.

As Cardinal Ratzinger, he spent 24 years as one of the senior figures in the Vatican, heading the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - once known as the Holy Office of the Inquisition.
