Sorry, I think that's a horrible photo. A little kid with a gun painfully manhandling a dog. Maybe I'm missing something.

Whatever idiot adult was taking that picture should have put down the

My Dad had a black lab before he married my Mom, and some of my best early memories are

of that dog and the ones that followed, and helping raise/train them for field dog trials. My

Dad's last dog just died in June, and it was one of the very few times in my life my 86 year

old former Marine father got choked up.

Yes yes, the parents should be imprisoned for negligence and animal abuse. The child and pup should be rescued and fostered separately to appropriately vetted homes (once the new families pay the processing and handling fees). Then the boy put through re-education camp and placed on a list prohibiting him from owning or working near any animal ever again.

Bit draconian he's only a little kid. Over here the approach would probably be just explain how to carry a dog and if the parents thought what he is doing is OK we have the RSPCA, our courts can ban people from keeping animals in extreme cases.

Why would national gun rights organisation post a picture like that? Without a context you can't really judge.

Because to some folks it's cute.

Pretty sure Acc was being sarcastic and decided to mock our hand wringing over that adorable little boy gently carrying the dog that's obviously enjoying the attention.

I'll betcha that little scene lasted less than one step. The kid was carrying the pup & the pup was obviously and quickly falling out of his grasp. Now, if the kid has a death grip on one leg and was dragging the pup, some of the hand-wringing would have merit.

eta: Nobody said anything about the way the kid's carrying the gun. Now there's a bad habit that could get someone killed.

Isn't he kind of small to work a shotgun anyway? And I don't know about losing his hold on the dog, he's got a handful of flesh in a pretty tight grip.

Very disturbing picture to me. There was no respect on the child's part in holding the animal...Looked just like...Let's just grab and go...

Yup. Grampa would'a taken my gun away, he caught me toting it that way, even if it was a toy gun.

We learned proper gun handling before we could even begin to learn to shoot the things.

I'm quite sure he was. Mind you this was posted by an organisation that goes around shooting bambi and thumper just for fun what kind of people can they be?

Kids usually don't mean any harm they just need to learn. my teenage nephew picked up our pup by it's front paw, not intentionally cruel just completely thoughtless and lucky his aunt didn't see it.

I did suggest in my post #4 in this thread that he be taught to hold the puppy correctly,

which probably meant two hands, therefore not carrying the 'weapon', too.

That what he's holding has orange tips tells me it is a 'toy', plus with this boy's

apparent age and lack of muscle tone, holding something correctly might have

to wait a year or so.

and in my experience, are very nice people.

I'm not cold hearted at all, on first view, this picture did look cute, but

that doesn't mean that comment can't be made as to the content, and

my feelings about it.

Yes they do, OK no doubt some do it to put food on the table or to protect crops everybody else it's for fun. I was being slightly facetious but let's not pretend in this day and age people hunt out of necessity they do it in the main for fun.

and swap lies, the overwhelming majority of the hunters *I* know DO

in fact use the meat for their families throughout the year.

because a lot of them are VERY realistic.

I'm prejudiced, over here hunting is in the main purely for entertainment carried out by a bunch of people whose idea of sport is blasting birds driven towards them out of the sky. would be more honest if they just said they like killing things for fun.

Our hunters here in central illinois aren't in it to just shoot stuff out of the sky. We print the local duck cards that are very popular in the area. It gives times and days that specific types of bird can be hunted throughout illinois. I don't understand it, but the old fellas always have a story about last year when they stop in.
