Thinking of getting one for someone for Christmas and I have

a question: Some ads I see have something called Xbox LIVE

12 month Gold subscription card. Do you have one of these,

do you use it and is it worth an extra 60 bucks?

Thanks.

Hard to figure, this person does already have Netflix. etc., wouldn't use the

sports aspect.

I just wondered if it was one of those things that people were sorry they spent the

money for, sounded good and then they didn't use it!

Sort of like a gym membership...

;)

Dear Valerie:

I am an expert on this. Seriously. I've been a gamer since 1976 and I've played almost every system and game to have ever existed. It's my hobby and I'm an avid fisherman if you get the allusion.

These days, gaming is all about the software, which is exactly what you are asking about.

1. The system with the most and best games and connectivity wins. That would be the Xbox, I was a Sony fanboy last generation but they have seriously dropped the ball this iteration.

2. You'll get an XBOX live account for free when you hook up your XBOX to the internet. This will allow you to play against your friends, cooperatively in the same game or against them. It will also let you download classic games, idie games, updates to all your current games, and add-on levels, save games to the cloud, and most of the things that you need a good videogame system to do. You'll be able to save your own music to the hard drive from a jump drive or CD, so who needs downloads?

So why pay the extra bucks for an XBOX Live GOLD membership when you all the basics free?

Well, that unlocks all the "goodies." Hulu, CBS, HBO, Encore, Xfinity, live events like concerts, etc. I really like it because a lot of times, I miss my favorite show like "Survivor", but I can pick it up on the XBOX.

Now, if you already have netflix, this may not be a good idea, or if you do not have Xfinity which I think is the best app on XBOX Live. Or if your TV has this stuff built in as an app, then don't shell out the extra bucks. You may want to just try it for a month or so, they usually have a free month trial going on in there. See if you use it, if you don't, save your money and just go with the basic free service.

Oh...I almost forgot ...YOU don't have one? Come on! You should see the state of the art in video games these days. Why watch a movie when you can PLAY one?
