howdy yawl

(is that an attempt at an american accent grumps ED)

its not very often i write about those over the pond in the big apple

(what are you babbling on about grumps ED)

new york in the good old US of A native new yorkers are taking the law into thier own hands as there is no sign of the police since hurricane sandy blew through the big apple.

RESIDENTS of New York’s storm-battered Queens district threatened to take the law into their own hands yesterday — and shoot looters.

The warnings emerged as much of the Manhattan skyline finally lit up again last night as electricity was turned back on after five days of power failures.

With no police on the streets to protect them, Queens locals armed themselves with guns, baseball bats and even bows and arrows.

Keone Singlehurst, 42, said: “It’s like the Wild West. I’ve got myself a bow and would definitely use it if I felt threatened.

Danielle Harris, 34, added: “We’ve booby-trapped our door and keep a baseball bat.

Some residents claimed criminals donned utility worker uniforms and knocked on doors of desperate residents in the middle of the night.

An estimated 81,000 homes in Queens are still without power and Long Island residents have been warned it could be the weekend before their supplies are restored.

Locals there put up signs warning looters to stay away.

i,d be delighted to hear contributions from my freinds across the pond

i could only guess that the police are probably guarding the wealthier propeties in manhatten.

although theres also the guardian angels who if i remember rightly was snubbed and laughed at when they first appeared bet they need them now though.

but at the end of the day new yorkers and all americans will pull together to get over this they returned to normal after 9/11 and they will return to normal after sandy.

good luck my american freinds

Very little violence or looting is occuring. That story is way exaggerated. But thanks, grumpy, for your kind words.

what is the situation out there with the police and GA?

i think the sun got the news second hand from the new york times and added a bit to spice it up.

No, the NYTimes doesn't print that stuff. The original article is from the New York Daily News, a rag, but not usually as bad a rag as the New York Post, which is part of Rupert Murdoch's media empire. Here is the link:

Who/What is GA? Do you mean the state of Georgia?

He's asking about the presence of the Guardian Angels in NY & NJ after the hurricane.

Thanks tab. No, I have heard nothing of GA. Curtis Sliwa I see often. He has a show on NY1, a cable station. He behaves like a buffoon & a right-wing clown making very foolish remarks. I know of no one who has seen the GA in years, on subways or elsewhere.

I thought you might be interested in an update on this story, which, as I originally said, was exagerated & overblown.

"At least half the post-Sandy looting busts have been tossed out, despite much grandstanding on the part of Brooklyn and Queens DAs... One of the most publicized looting incidents — in which 16 people were rounded up for raiding a Coney Island Key Foods the day after the storm — resulted in just two indictments for third-degree burglary, records show."
