A letter from the DPP's office to the constabulary noted the allegations were 'somewhat stale' and 'completely without corroboration', that Smith had denied the allegation and that therefore there was no realistic prospect of a conviction.
Because it boils down to the word of scumbag children in care against that of prominent politician. The same reason nothing was ever done about Jimmy Saville and his ilk and why no one took the more recent complaints complaints from children in Rochdale seriously. Call it class prejudice or whatever you like.

I don't like the expression ' a sign of the times ' but they said on the news tonight that It really was down to the fact that the children In care would not have been believed as at the time were labelled 'unreliable witness's' and If this happened today, that would not stand...
