Egyptian President's supporters clash with rioters in Cairo - Africa - World - The Independent

hardly a peep on the mainstream news but to me this looks like an attempt by fundamentalist Muslims to take over egypt. A new constitution that would end the secular state in egypt and put sharia law in place.

The moment he tried to put himself above the law he set himself of a collision course with the people. I only hope that they get him out of there without bloodshed.

It's hard to reason with people that believe god is telling them what to do. You or I or some others may see it merely as a blatant power grab to a believer opponents are resisting the will of god. Depends what the army and police decide to do I think.

The army appear to be standing back and refusing to take sides - at the moment.

The thread seems to sum up my thinking on what's going on. Seems the Islamic Brotherhood were organised and able to move quickly into the power vacuum to grab key areas of government and the liberal opposition was not an organised force, just people on the ground, and took a while after the end of the actual resistance phase to get going in terms of day to day politics.

I wish them all the best.

I think they have a real fight on their hands. Whether the harm religion does outweighs the good in the modern world would be an interesting argument to have.

The Egyptian army will take the side of whoever guarantees the leaderships future, most likely it will be whatever side is backed by the US. The MB is becoming and more powerful though, its hard to say.

The US has a record of backing repressive regimes like mubareks, against the interests of their people so long as they supported american interests. They turn a blind eye to what is happening in bahrain for instance which may not register in america but does ion the middle east. The likely winners look like the muslim brotherhood who are hardly amongst americas supporters even if morsi did help in the recent gaza/israel flare up he's not really likely to stand by and do nothing if israel doesn't change it's policy. It's the same in syria, anyone who replaces assad is likely to be anti-israeli and islamist. How likely is the US to defend israel if they keep ignoring the international community and pursuing their lebensraum policies in palestine? Religious parties in control in syria and egypt might not be rational in their decision making. Democracy is an imposition from the west and I susopect many see it that way, I can't see the muslim brotherhood giving up power without a fight. You even people in the states that argue democracy is a bad idea as it lets people who maybe shouldn't (according to them) have a vote get a say.
