All 2013 models, so not a lot out yet, but still, this is for
potential roll away because they will come out of park
w/o key being in ignition:
Chevy
Silverado
Suburban
Tahoe
Avalanche
Express
GMC
Sierra
Savana
Yukon
Escalade

It's all part of the stimulus plan. Twice as much work if you have a recall. This might drive unemployment down a tic. :yh_wink

And the masses flock to rescued losers....counter to most rational thought.

Yes. Redundant safety systems.

because they will come out of park

So why would you not have the handbrake on if you are parked with the engine off? Just puzzled I'd have thought most drivers would never encounter the problem.
Colloquial term for automatics here is granny cars since it's mainly OAP's and the disabled that tend to buy them.

I think that a lot of people are lazy and don't use it, first off, and quite
possibly if some of the larger vehicles like the Escalade were parked on
any sort of slope, that their weight might cause the hand brake to be
ineffective?
This is a problem w/o anyone actually IN the vehicle, I gather.

It's getting to the point where you'll be told after test driving a car and signing the papers to return it after the novelty wears off so it can be finished being built.

No car is so heavy its handbrake has reason to be ineffective unless its defective - let's face it, a forty ton artic has a handbrake that works.

To be honest I was mostly shocked that people would park without their handbrake on

Standard shift vehicles are rare here. Putting a car in park locks the tires & is typically good enough.

That's what struck me as a bit odd as well.

I usually park leaving it in gear and with the handbrake on, as do most people, but that's a habit just in case the handbrake doesn't hold. Even with an automatic you put the brake on I would have thought, I do anyway. (driven them just don't like them at all) Maybe it's because you have fewer hills to park on or something.
Used to have a Citroen where the handbrake worked on the front disc brakes, bad design as the discs cooled the brake would sometimes slacken off.

I used to only drive standard until I moved somewhere that gets icy in the winter and I found I couldn't for the life of me learn how to take off without slipping. Its a lot easier now in a granny car.

No doubt you are one of those people who read the manual and know to lock it in a low gear. Many is the happy time I have been stuck behind a rear wheel drive automatic beemer or Mercedes trying to get up a hill, I think there is a case for banning them in the winter and yes I do realise that is not wholly rational but I feel I am entitled to pet hates.
