I hesitate to ask but I feel the need. Is the idiosyncratic spelling in that post an attempt to transcribe a specific American dialect? It has an affinity to the style employed by Joel Chandler Harris when he reported the Uncle Remus stories.

Or, perhaps, Yu come down dah wid yo hat caved in, Doo-dah! doo-dah! An go back home wid a pocket full of tin, Oh! doo-dah day.

I may be mistaking your intent, of course.

I was interested in where you think the dialect you've employed descends from. I may be wrong in thinking it resembles a southern slave-plantation rural black speech pattern but if I am then I'd very much like to be corrected, and who better to correct me than the person who wrote it. Is it a representation of your own everyday conversational speech, for example?

It's a sports fan thing, not a race thing, fg. Saturday night live has done numerous skits on bears fans over the years, for example. We don't take offense.

Then again, as a Chicago sports fan you are kinda expected to get the joke:wah:

Although them bulls are looking promising this year:-6

What are these Chicago sports of which you speak? Are they native only to Chicago?

Those bulls, flopster. Not them bulls. Those bulls take the subjective case.

Dumbing down is a topic which interests me. Whenever I see television advertisements I try hard to work out whether the demographic targeting implied by the shouting dimwit impersonators does actually increase the sales of whatever's on offer. Presumably it must or they'd not do it. How this relates to encouraging a Bronco to get jiggy or advocating the cheesing up of dem slackers at the bay I'm not sure, but my underlying feeling is that it undoubtedly does.

Dumbing down is a despicable uncultured anti-social obscenity.

I thought "lez" might be a lesbian reference but I didn't care enough to ask. Cheese is a famous product of Wisconsin, Green Bay is in Wisconsin, therefore cheese and Green Bay get mentioned together fairly frequently. I don't know anyone that actually says 'dem' for 'them' but I hear people say "bidness" "birfday" and "sammich" quite a bit.

I'm tempted to try writing phonetically though I'll create a specific thread in which to do it. Finding grotesque examples of dumbed-down speech will be simple, it seems ubiquitous.

Yes, I knew his meaning was "let us" but "lez be friends" has been around forever and I've never seen anyone use the word for anything else. It was an odd choice.

It's a bit like Woody Allen's hypersensitivity to "Jew think so?".

Well you learned something new today and will never be able to say "I've never seen anyone use the word for anything else".

Can't believe you called me "odd" though. :(
