While sitting in a Hotel lobby today, there was a "water pond" in the center of the lobby. And I observed the following: There had to be several hundred dollars in coins in that pond!
WHAT WAS IT THAT MADE MANY PEOPLE STOP AS THEY PASSED BY AND THEY JUST SEEM COMPELLED TO HAVE TO THROW A "COIN" IN THAT POND? :-2

I always do it because I figure my luck is bad enough. Why take chances?

Bothwell and i were at a lovely restaurant in St. Augustine. we threw some coins in the fountain. i asked him what he wished for. he said that he wished the next time we were there i would be visiting from England. that was the nicest thing he could have said, i don't regret those coins! he made me feel so good.

LC - you're not supposed to say what you wish for

- it supposedly jinxes the wish (according to the tradition). Anyway, I hope it doesn't for you! You can prove them wrong!

Coins have always been traditionally thrown into wells and people make wishes (hence the phrase `wishing well`!) I don`t mind doing it if I know all the coins are going to be fished out again for charities but sometimes over here yobs just pinch it if the well isn`t fenced in!

Are you going to be able to give up being a gun owner?? and a bad-ass US copper?? You are going to trade all those rednecks for soccer hooligans.
Oh, duh! not a real big stretch. Shouldn't take long to get used to.

Oh, duh! not a real big stretch. Shouldn't take long to get used to.

)i AM concerned about the gun thing, i am so accustomed to carrying. some agencies in UK do carry, but i would not be eligible until i am a citizen. i can live with it. i think i'd rather be a bookstore owner than a 'badass' copper anymore, i have had enough. i would like to live a few more years! but it will be weird. illustrative of the Brit POV i had my gunbelt hanging on the door to my room. he was mesmerized by it, and when i went out to dunky donuts to get us coffee he said he could not believe i left him there with my weapon. he is a former soldier/paratrooper who has seen combat! but that gun in plain view bothered him. it never occurred to me.

CONFESSION!!
When I was a little girl, my friend and I stole about a buck from fountain to buy soda pop. It was hot! I still feel guilty about that. I hope the wishes true anyway.

It's the superstitious celt in people-an old pagan custom to propitiate the water spirits before crossing a river or acknowledging the spirits in a loch, you know they're not really there but just in case
