I think we are at war because this Administration saw quick & easy profits coming from Iraq's robust oil industry. Though crippled by sanctions the US & the Saudis saw a great opportunity to topple a 3rd World dictator and come rolling in with our own oil industry contractors to set up the profit machine, complete with cheap local labor. After our President, VP, CIA and others manufactured the lie that Iraq was a direct threat to US stockholders most Americans believed it of course and committed their kids to die for the defense of their great country. THEN, the reasons for the war changed. The reason for the war changed to 'Getting rid of a brutal tyrant.' THEN it changed to 'Spreading Democracy." Now the war is about fighting terrorism. Soon it will be about revenge for all the soldiers that have been killed. I say Draft Young Republicans.

oil, money, finishing Daddy's war, find Osama - Osama who? :-2 bring Democracy to third world countries, keeping weapons of mass destruction out of third world countries (especially away from Israel) - there are any number of reasons. The only reason I have NOT heard is to spread Christianity.

Islam is the world's largest religion and spreading fast. Christians will have to someday come to terms with their minority status.

Hi David. I'm curious as to why you say Islam is "....spreading fast" What are you basing that on?
Thanks, Jika.

Thought this whole war actually went back to when Saddam illegally invaded Kuwait and the Americans / Allies went in to liberate them. They fought the Iraqis back to the border and wanted to press on to overthrow the regime because of the Kurds getting slaughtered in the north, but the UN wouldn`t authorise it then. (However, the Iraqis actually maintain that Kuwait has always historically been part of Iraq and was illegally `partitioned` due to oil wealth anyway, so with most world problems, there`s no straightforward explanation)

If that is the situation, Buzz, tread very carefully.

I think the billion + Tao Ching followers in China would disagree with you.

Birthrates in China are steady to declining while the poorer African and Asian Muslim countries are experiencing a population explosion that is also sweeping Europe. I see a greater threat coming from fundamentalist Islam's roots in uneducated poverty stricken areas throughout the 3rd World than from a strictly Chinese philosophy inside China, where religion is closely monitored or banned.

I agree that uneducated poverty stricken people turn to religion to understand their plight in life, I think they should look to their governing bodies and not to the heavens - hence the term uneducated. I agree with the population explosion too - if you have no other pleasure in life - you take and give it to your partner. They need birth control - again another governing issue. As for the repression of religion in China - I don't believe it. Any people who "believe" will do so whether it is in the privacy of their heart or in a church or temple. The control of population in China is a direct result of government intervention - for better or worse. I don't agree with that as I have heard (probably American propaganda) that they leave undesirable infants in the woods to die.

The Falun Gong and Catholic faiths are recent targets by the police. 'One Child Only' policies are enforced in the larger cities among the working poor. And, as in many Asian countries infanticide is relatively routine. Especially regarding female infants. We aren't talking about a fetus, but an infant. Poverty breeds fear and ignorance. Religion offers a refuge from thinking for yourself. Enter the fundamentalists.
