I glanced at a headline this morning that indicated it has happened once before in 1415.

Wow! That's 600 years ago!

Call me cynical and I guess I could be wrong, but I expect there is more to his resignation than meets the eye.

Yeah well he is 86 so he's no spring chicken as Lola used to say!

I wonder if he goes to a retirement home now and does the Vatican give him a monthly pension and what does he wear and how is he addressed?

I assume the Vatican will still house him & provide for him..

This has not happened in 600 yrs. so they'll have to wing it.

Why would he need to step down - others continued on thru their illness.?

You wouldn't be able to attend as many appearances - but others continued.? interesting?

I saw it speculated that possibly the incentive was to have him bow out before his physical & mental state became such that his followers began to question his judgement. He's at the point now where he's unable to travel any longer.

I see this as a great opportunity for them to sell off the assets, give the proceeds to charity and close the doors.

If covering up for paedophile priests didn't bother him why relevance has sandy hook? Besides wasn't the shooter a protestant?

No, YZGI, he's no God.

"A pope is the Bishop of Rome and the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the head of the independent and sovereign state of Vatican City. The person holding the office of the pope is always male, although there have been rumors to the contrary, a priest who has risen through the ranks to the status of a cardinal, and well-versed in theological doctrine and dogma. Historically, with one or two probable exceptions, the pope has always been white — there were three popes from Africa, but their races are not certain). The faithful believe him to be the successor of an office originated by Saint Peter himself, one of Christ's twelve apostles.

The office of the pope has been in existence for over a thousand years. The power it has wielded has expanded and shrunk as the needs and the beliefs of the people it governs have changed. In its early centuries, popes crowned kings and emperors and were much involved in the politics of the day, even to the extent of validating wars and other forms of social unrest. For awhile, the pope even maintained that his office should be the head of the whole of Western civilization. Throughout the ages, the papacy has been marred with violence, scandal, and even murder."

Nostradamus had something to say about here being a series of popes in quick succession. Can't find the relevant bit just now but this is an enjoyable summary that includes a reference to it.

Nostradamus, Quatrain 5.31 ~

Par terre Attique chef de la sapience,

Qui de present est la rose du monde:

Pont ruiné & sa grand pre-eminence,

Sera subdÃ*te & naufrage des undes.

Through the land of Attica, leader of wisdom,

Which at present is the rose of the world:

The Pontiff ruined and his great pre-eminence,

To be subjugated and a shipwreck in the waves.

Nostradamus, Quatrain 2.97 ~

Romain Pontife garde de t'approcher,

De la cité que deux fleuves arrouse,

Ton sang viendras aupres de lÃ* cracher,

Toi & les tiens quand fleurira la Rose.

Roman Pontiff beware of your approaching,

Of the city where two rivers water,

Your blood you will come to spit in that place,

Both you and yours when blooms the Rose

Is it possible that they've been electing the Popes using Malachy's prophesy as a guide? Or do you think it's completely random that the choices coincide with events in his vision?:-3

Goodness knows but I doubt it. I'm fairly sure visions, second sight and the like are viewed as witchcraft so I doubt they would be influenced by it, on the other hand they believe saints have visions so who knows. . I'm not a catholic, in fact I'm not religious at all but was brought up a heretical Presbyterian but I think supposedly their choices are guided by god though how that explains the Borgias and the like I haven't a clue. A practising catholic might know the right answer but anything I say is likely to sound anti-catholic, which if I was a protestant you would expect. Wonder why god zapped the vatican or do they accept the scientific explanation and have lightning conductors.

Good riddance to him, I say! Ratzinger is

1. Directly responsible for the deaths and suffering of thousands in Africa through his anti-condom stance in a continent blasted with AIDS.

2. Prime protector of pedophiles around the world through his strategy of moving and forgiving the offenders instead of putting on trial.

3. An actual nazi.

The 10 Men Who Would Be Pope

I wondered what are the requirements to be elected pope?

"Technically, any Catholic male who has reached the age of reason, is not a heretic, is not in schism, and is not “notorious” for simony can be elected pope — there is no other requirement for election (although there are several requirements before a person can actually assume the papacy once elected). It might even be technically possible for them to elect a non-Catholic male, if they had reason to believe that he would immediately convert to Catholicism."

credit to:

Electing the Next Pope: Who Can Be Elected Pope?

Now I ask what is an "age of reason"? All of the ones listed in buzzfeed reports seem awfully old to me.

Is it that wisdom is to come with age/experience? I don't always find that to be true.

I suppose it would be controversial to point out that any catholic male that has reached the age of reason that is unlikely to still be a catholic. You can't be capable of reason and religious one precludes the other.

The following is from today's news:

"Pope Benedict's resignation linked to gay conclave: report

A 300-page dossier compiled by three cardinals investigating the theft of Vatican documents was reportedly given to the Pope the day he decided to resign. The investigation is said to have uncovered a number of factions within the Vatican of gay men who have engaged in sexual activity with male prostitutes and at organized sex romps."
