it's the Memorial Day weekend here in the states. a time we remember our war dead. if i may be personal, my parents are buried at Arlington, a great honor. when i was a girl my Dad would take me there and explain the significance. so now i am hurting that i cannot be there, but i love what they do...decorate every grave with a flag, and there are reverant ceremonies. horses, cannon, fly-bys, all the honor that is deserved. i am there in spirit. and i hope everyone remembers our war dead this weekend. :yh_flag :yh_flag :yh_flag

we always knew it was a time to remember with the parades and people... it is also a long weekend that kicks off the start of summer. it gives us a 3 day weekend and thats it until July 4th, which is also on a monday this year, yes another 3 day weekend. Last year paid holidays were on saturday, so i didn't have to pay holiday yippie. :-6 hope for sunshine, we need it!

All across the nation the flags will be flying and a host of parades, exhibitions and other forms of gatherings will be taking place.

Each and every one of us has cause to give thanks to our men and women who gave and are giving the ultimate sacrifice to keep this great country free and a shining example to others.

My father was an air ranger in the army and was killed in a military plane crash. I can't be there to decorate his grave either. My brother will do it for the family this year. He is the reason I feel so strongly for the military. He gave his life for this country doing what he loved to do - being a pilot. He has been dead for 44 years now but we (my brothers and I) remember him always. I have the flag that draped his coffin and will fly it on Monday in his honor. I was young when he died but I will never forget the missing man fly over at the funeral. I still get chills whenever I see it on TV.

It's a wonderful sight on an official Flag Day to see the Stars and Stripes flying from so many homes - each one with it's own story to tell.

I have to hand it to the 'Americans', they can really put on the parades, marching bands and the US army or navy. I have watched many armies on parades on tv ect. But no other country/nation can match you. Your looking Good USA

Memorial day here is really Decoration day, instituted after the civil war. when i used to visit Arlington and see the Tomb of the Unknowns , the honored Marines who watched over it, i would weep. they were perfect in their duty, and the best of the best.

I too remember the 21 gun salute. The first volley scared the ******** out of me and then the fly over and then the tears. God bless you too LC. I fly my fathers flag with pride but ineviatably someone stops to point out the fact there are only 48 stars on it. I've been offered new flags by some people if I would only turn in the outdated one. I am usually too dumbstruck to respond with anything other than - it's my Daddy's coffin flag. Even after this explaination they think I am unpatriotic. Go figure some a-holes.

My uncle died in World War II when his Hawker Hurricane crashed - he was a true hero and I wish I had been old enough to know him. Bless all of you who had the privilege of knowing your family members who gave their lives so that we may enjoy ours in freedom today!!

Origin of the 21-Gun Salute



The tradition of saluting can be traced to the Middle Ages practice of placing oneself in an unarmed position and, therefore, in the power of those being honored. The cannon salute might have originated in the 17th century with the maritime practice of demanding that a defeated enemy expend its ammunition and render itself helpless until reloaded -- a time-consuming operation in that era.



In the Anglo-Saxon Empire, seven guns was a recognized naval salute, seven being the standard number of weapons on a vessel. Because more gunpowder could be stored on dry land, forts could fire three rounds for every one fired from sea, hence the number 21. With the improvement of naval gunpowder, honors rendered at sea were increased to 21 as well.



Beginning in our colonial period the United States fired one shot for each state in the Union. This was continued until 1841 when it was reduced to 21 from 26. Although it had been in use for more than 30 years, the 21-gun salute was not formally adopted until Aug. 18, 1875. This was at the suggestion of the British, who proposed a "Gun for Gun Return" to their own 21-gun salute.

I posted his pic because I'm very proud of him and what he did, and the ultimate sacrifice he made to defend and protect the freedoms we have today. I'm glad to see you do the same, nvalleyvee!

and let us not forget the women...my Dad's mother spoke 7 languages. she was just a little tiny lady. but our government employed her to interview war criminals. she did a great service to our country.
