It annoys the life out of me when British people complain about our health care service, the NHS.

This Is my hospital half a mile from my home and where Mr O Is a Volunteer.

Frenchay Hospital where even the colony of wild cats get fed by staff.

Too bad the tories want to privatise it and make it more american. Just wait, people who are on benefits to have restricted access to the NHS. Nurses to be privatised - have their amended revoked and be taken back on as private contractors with lower pay and no things like pensions, sick pay etc etc. They did it to the cleaning staff only a matter of time before they do it to the nursing staff, think what they would save in pensions. provision of care for lifestyle illnesses - like diabetes, obesity smoking related illnesses to be. there is no such thing as community so all the district nurses and any community care provision will go. Maybe if they all stopped interfering and just let them get on with things life for NHS staff might get better. How is it an NHS manager can be paid more than a doctor?

I am pleased to see Cameron addressing health tourism though.

You need to get out more.

That's twice I've seen the phrase 'you need to get out more' directed to gmc with 10,430 posts who has been a member four years longer than Oscar who has 25,396 posts. It did make me chuckle :wah:

I have said it before and I shall remind you again it's NOT FREE !!

It comes with a cost, you and I pay it same as everybody else who works or has worked. I know you might think I am splitting hairs or being pedantic or whatever, it is free at the point of delivery and long may it be.

Apart from that I have never complained about the NHS, other than when I have spent 3 hours in A&E waiting.............but even that is forgiveable with a little understanding of what they are actually doing there.

You're right, Yes, we do pay for It In National Insurance which I believe Is minimal compared to say the States and private Insurance.

But you can not deny that had you of never worked a day In your life, you would still have had the exact same treatment regardless. That's what I mean by Free.

About the National Health Service (NHS) in England - NHS Choices

I know you know, but you know what some of our American members might think......sigh.....all us socialists left wing nasties.

If all the money is pooled, and if it is carefully scrutinised regularly, it has to be the most efficient way to supply healthcare.

Anybody who has a child and a semi serious illness during their life has got their moneys worth, and almost painlessly financially.

Wouldn't surprise me if it did. We are sleepwalking away from the basic principles of the NHS.

Begs the question why other governments did nothing about it. Come to that I don't see why the NHS should sort out the mistakes made by private hospitals for free, sort them out by all means make the private medical companies pay for it.

For me that's one of the farcical things, time targets for A & E. I'm sorry but if you turn uo at A & E with a splinter in your figure you are at the back of the queue behind people who might die without treatment. I too have spend three hours in A & E - industrial accident at two i the morning that needed stitches but sitting there watching the ambulances roll up I reckoned there was more urgent cases being dealt with than my painful but not life threatening injury.

I think the reason the Tories want to see some sort of privatisation Is to move away from the old socialist values of the NHS. I don't want to see that but I do want health tourism stopped.

As for A and E... at my hospital that I linked, you see a Triage nurse the moment you arrive which is good because you feel at least you have been attended to. then they determine how urgent you are and how much pain you are In which determines waiting time. Most people sensibly will only go to A and E when they are In serious trouble but a few turn up for a splinter and they are the one's whining In the waiting room.

I'm happy to take my turn but the only time I really did kick off and made a formal complaint was when Mr O broke his arm and shoulder. Mr O was seen fairly quickly but while he was waiting some tattoo'd scroat handcuffed to two police officers breeezed In and went In before every other patient. The police explained that the scroat had attempted to attack them and the canine unit had bit him.
