I'm not sure of the exact square footage of my front deck,

probably about standard master bedroom size or so, but the

quote we got to replace it with Trex? SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS.

I'm sorry, but any money like that we have is going into our

retirement accounts!

So, last week I demo'd (yes, *I* demo'd!) the rotted section in

front, over the weekend my husband and I replaced a couple of

boards and shored up the steps, and Monday I painted both it

and the 2 decks at the rear of the house.

Total cost: Few cents of electricity for power tools and about 30

bucks worth of Glidden Porch and Floor.

Good for you - repair rather than replace is certianly the way to go.

I had to look up Trex, last I heard it was a brand of lard. Looks good stuff but not at that price.

Elbow grease, works every time.

Nice work, Val! We'll doing something along that line for the next few weeks. We want to replace the porch floor paint with a color stain and have been blasting the old paint away with a power washer as time & well water levels permit! The paint just isn't holding up well on the floor boards although it still looks pretty good on the railings and posts. I hope it's as successful as your project!

Me too, Tabby. The deck had been on this house for a few years

before we bought it, a bit too many paintings to try and get rid of

it all. The main problem with the front deck is whoever built it not

only put in planter boxes with sprinkler heads, he built it out over

the point at which our dryer exhausts on the side of the house!

So, wood, dirt, heat, moisture... not a good combo for longevity.

Are you thinking of using a Behr product? I've heard some pretty

good things about a lot of their stuff...

We went with Sherwin-Williams who happened to be having a 30% off sale on each gallon for most of the month of May. Good timing! We got everything about 2 weeks ago and here's what we bought ~~~~~> DeckScapes® Exterior Acrylic Solid Color Deck Stain - Sherwin-Williams

The color is "Pineneedle" which is on the far left, third row down. That's for the floor and the posts and railings are "Navajo White" which is just above it. There's always a few anxious moments when you start until you decide if it actually looks good or not! :-3

I saw them using something similar to Trex on a PBS show "This Old House" and they laid prefabricated flooring on top of an existing wooden deck. It looked really nice after they finished it!

If the existing deck is rotten enough that you have to replace then I query the idea of laying new over it - it might look nice but how long will it last?
