Oh, so you were celebrating after the West Ham game, too, eh?! (joke!). Seriously, the best way to avoid a hangover is not to drink too excess in the first place but as we`re all only human, once you`ve done it, I SERIOUSLY find the best cure is 2 strong paracetamol / ibuprofen ASAP and then every 4 hours after if still necessary. I totally disregard that advice about `hair of the dog` and `eat a hearty fry-up`!!!

From several threads on the Forum this morning it appears that, in UK, many people drink alcohol to excess as a form of either enjoyment or release from the realities of life. It underscores the fact that per capita alcoholic consumption there is the third highest in Europe (passing Ireland on the way) and is an astonishing 5 times higher than here in the USA.

Binge drinking seems to be a part of the natural way of life to many people.

Together with images of out-of-control drunk soccer hooligans and the problems of underage drinking highlighted by several posters on this Forum it seems to add up to a rather unwholesome picture.

Is this an accurate picture of life in at least some parts of the British community?

I have undertaken extensive research in this field. take two aspirin the night before and drink at least a pint of water before beddie byes. In the morning, black coffee plus the fizziest sugary drink you can stand plus the full english breakfast, it probably wont cure you but at least you have something to throw up :D

well I've managed to make it so far through the day. I've had 2 tablets, a meat and potato pie, a buttered barm, a can of Tizer and a packet of Quavers and I must say I'm feeling that bit better for it! :D

I think we get portrayed as a binge drinking society by what people see on the news and it doesn't paint a good picture for us. Although, how many times when the sun is out, have you thought 'lets sit outside the pub with half a lager' or 'lets get the BBQ out and have a few beers'. We do it because its what we know and has probably been part of most British people's lives for decades. There are always going to be the minority that spoil it and tar us with the same brush.

As a son of the nation that gave the world Nelson, Drake, etc I am scornful of the sea and it's reputation, I laugh at tales of cape horn and giant spindly killer fish which abound there.

the incident to which LC refers was at least force 14 with 70ft waves and make the "Perfect Storm" look like a boating lake. I may have been slightly poorly but who would not have been in the circumstances. (LC, see me after school)

Gosh it is a little late for a cure, I find if you know you have drank wayyyyyyyyyy too much before you go to bed toss back the ibuprofen, tylenal or what ever with a chaser of about 4 cups of water, yes that many as your system is dry. And along with those take 2 ginger tablets. The drug will help prevent a headache, the ginger settles the stomach. If you awake in the inbetween, drink more water, force yourself. Then when you awake in the morning you should feel fairly well.

However.... currently, try the drugs anyway, they don't seem to help me much after the fact, but the ginger is a god send, take it for your belly and drink loads of water all day, steer clear of caffine. I have also heard Midol, the ladies PMS drug works well for hangovers, hmmm pelvic cramps and cranium cramps can't be all that different ahahahahaha GOOD LUCK

Hey smithy....The only thing that will cure a hangover is TIME, unfortunately. Minks has it right, your body is dehydrated from all the booze, (how's THAT for ironic: the more you drink, the drier you get) and water is what will help, but won't fix the problem.

Drink as much water as you can, and eat!! I know the thought of food probably isn't very appealing right now, but that will help also.

For anyone interested in PREVENTING hangovers, there are a few steps you can take to not feel so cruddy the morning after a binge:

For every alcoholic drink, also have a glass of water or fruit juice. (Alternate them, booze, water, booze, water etc...)

Once you're done drinking, take 2 aspirin or ibuprofen before you hit the sheets, whether you feel crappy or not.

Stay awake until your buzz begins to fade. When you go to bed hammered, your hangover will be twice as bad in the morning.

Don't mix your drinks. If you start out with wine, stay with wine.

And after reading a couple other posts today, please, get yourself a designated driver and DON'T DRIVE DRUNK! (That's all the preaching I'll do today, promise.)

I very stupidly mixed my drink. Well lets just say the only thing I didn't drink was the lighter fuel for the BBQ. And I got a taxi home. But I don't drink that often so when I'm having a good time and the alcohol is flowing............ :D

Ah Smithy think of it this way, one day out of your life is a very very small percentage of time to feel crappy and it shall pass. (giggles)

I recall my teen years living at home. One of the things I hated most in the food groups (still do) was fried eggs. My father (in my teen years) was a misserable SOB and never ever allowed my brother or I to sleep in on weekends. What he took particular delight in was getting me out of bed and making me come to the breakfast table for snotty fried eggs when he knew I was out drinking the night before. What I learned from years of that...... QUIT DRINKING SO MUCH. A hangover is torture enough and boy I guess old dad did his job right cause I have no desier to tie into the booze like that again.

Serious warning ahead, folks, if you have been drinking DO NOT take

ibuprofen or tylenol. Both can be very toxic when combined with alcohol

and can do serious liver/kidney damage!

Aspirin is a little better, I suggest if you're able use the buffered variety

and eat a little something if you can keep it down. Even just a plain

piece of bread. Or go with Alka-Seltzer!

Fluids, ginger, and TIME are all very good suggestions!

Wow! You'll destroy your insides with all that rubbish.

'A Full English' sounds like one of those British fry-up's. That's a plateload of chlorestrol!
