The Black Queen

To the eye amiable
Is thy step and deed
But to the mind detestable
Is thy way and creed
Fair like a rose in bloom
When thou laugh or smile or sigh
Yet venomous like a viper thou art
To a heart captured by thy lie
A slave thou madest me
For giving thee my love and trust
Through labor rough and mean
In the tare-stocked vineyard of thy lust
No appreciator of my love
Only silver and gold are thy cares
For little means my heart to thee
Comparing not to thy wares
Be thou informed O’ black queen
That thy days of reign are like snow
Which in winter covereth the land
But in spring doth melt and away flow
Is thy step and deed
But to the mind detestable
Is thy way and creed
Fair like a rose in bloom
When thou laugh or smile or sigh
Yet venomous like a viper thou art
To a heart captured by thy lie
A slave thou madest me
For giving thee my love and trust
Through labor rough and mean
In the tare-stocked vineyard of thy lust
No appreciator of my love
Only silver and gold are thy cares
For little means my heart to thee
Comparing not to thy wares
Be thou informed O’ black queen
That thy days of reign are like snow
Which in winter covereth the land
But in spring doth melt and away flow
