A TV newsreader was subjected to vile racist and sexist abuse after she decided not to wear a poppy during a bulletin on Armistice Day.

I refuse to wear them too. I'll give $20 over the the old bloke or woman sitting at their poppy stand but I won't take one.

It's a modern day idea. No one thought of wearing a poppy in the old days. It's the rewriting of history for our children to become the next wave of cannon fodder.

Excuse me but I know older people who remember many more rememberance days than your good self and they were never worn. It's an American idea, that spread to England and afterwards elsewhere. I know old vetrans who will not wear it.

To me it accounts for only one war and all who died in 'that particular war'. ..........not just soldiers. I donate my money to legacy and do one minutes silence but I will not wear that darn thing. In fact going into town on that day I hardly saw one being worn.

Even now i have no idea where the sprig of rosemary comes into ANZAC day . Never used to be worn. Only just learnt about it on that wiki link. That's another one that has only just popped up as a fashion statment. I'ts all becoming very very weird all of the sudden, the constant bigger and better ceremonial jargon.

However, It's completely Irrelevant to the thread. Talk and work with as many war vets as I do among the Royal British Legion and you'll find the purpose Is to honour fallen comrades and raise money to help veterans.

Wether anyone chooses to wear a poppy or not Is up to them but some people need to to do a little research as to what the Poppy symbolises. It does not represent the wars per say.

However, It looks like In Bristol we have had yet another bumper year this year.

America? I'd never even heard of it until people on this forumbrought it up. I would guess it was started in the UK.

King George V began Remembrance day on 7 November 1919.

I don't pay much heed to wikki.

Australia has Anzac day and not our UK Remembrance Sunday where most of the country wears a poppy.

Ummmm not correct. We still have Remembrance day but we have it on the actual day of One minutes silence at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month.

They even built this for it.
