Was at a store the other day, and got the request for my zip code.
For some reason, I just HATE this. (I know, I'm an old grump!) What
I usually do is give my dad's zip code that's (was!) about 100 miles
away, just to let the poor sap who goes through all these see something
different for a change! One time a clerk said he just puts in his own, he
hated asking all the time and he knew people hated doing it!! I've
heard all the marketing arguments about better serving their customer base
and all that, but leave me alone. Sometimes I feel like saying "Zero zero,
zero zero zero" and see what they do.
Harumph!

Valerie, I totally agree with you ,and this is also one of the reasons why I have as few credit or store cards as possible - I`d like people to mind their own business and leave me alone (even if it means they may not have the type of bread or eggs on the shelf that I like - though personally I consider it more sinister than this!)

Here Here I agree with you.
As a single woman living alone, I refuse to offer up my credit card number and address together.
We encoungtered an interesting scam at a beer fest not so long ago. It was a vacation contest. Enter and win. On the entry form it asked phone numbers, addresses, what credit card you use and if your in good standing with them, yada yada. Soo the BF fills his out completely, I simply put on my name and cell number (there is no tracing anything there)
Well a few days later the BF gets a call, they explain all that he wins, it sounds grand and glorious until they ask are you in good standing with your credit card company, and if you give us +$600 today over the phone you qualify, yada yada. So he immediately hung up on them.
Next day I get the call, I am laughing as I knew the speel from the BF but play along anyway, and they ask my address, I refuse to offer my home one but tell them my office addy. They go on about the deal, then ask about the credit card I tell them it is not their business the standings. Then they tell me if I pay +$600 I qualify, I finally loose it and tell them, you do NOT get my address, Credit info, or anything else from me just to "qualify" and hung up.
If you are the least bit skeptical of such scamming, try offering up your credit card number, and different address than your one at home, in a quick check they can find out they do not match. So you tell me our personal info is not linked. HAH I also had this happen with yoru home phone number and cc number, home phone number and social security or social insurance number. If these do not link they question you. Soooooooooooooooooooooo I think it is best not to offer up too much info.
All of you beware of scammers out there. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes.

You can get irritated about it or have fun with it. Next time,
look at the clerk with a devilish glint in your eye and say "I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours" or something as suggestive.
Maybe give too many digits & see what the reaction is.
Check your fly, then say "Thanks, but it's fine."
More suggestions?

I hate this too. It just sounds intrusive. I always say, "I'm homeless." When that earns me a weird look, and then a long pause because they have no idea what to do or say, I tell them to enter their own. I once had a clerk tell me that she "had" to have a zip code. I told her to make one up. She started to argue with me, so I left all my stuff there, and on my way out, told the store manager that I was leaving, and why. Never shopped in that store again. I'm stubborn as an ox.
Accountable, I REALLY like the checking your fly idea! I will be using that one!

Sometimes they also ask for your phone # with the area code.
My wife just says:
"I don't give that infomation out." The clerk just says ok, and goes about their business!

I started doing the same, works every time, try it!!! :guitarist

I could see myself doing this:
Clerk: whats your zip code?
Me: Zip code?
clerk: yea your zip code.
Me: I don't get it.
Clerk: the 5 digits at the end of your city/state.
Me: Digits?
Clerk: The numbers at the end of your city/state.
Me: city and states have numbers in them?
Clerk: uh.....
Me: do you think I'm retarded?
This could go on and on. I would seriously have to be in a mood to go through all that though.
