Found this in a local newspaper and I have an idea this could work on both the four and two legged variety.

Soak cubes of bread in a dish of red wine mixed with sugar and place in the area where the rats are present. Very soon the rats become addicted and cannot resist the bait.

They soon set off in search of water but are so intoxicated that they are an easy, non-toxic prey for cats, raptors and other predators.

Works like a charm they say,

Alternatively, encourage and feed your local Fox population and you'll never see a rat or a mouse ever again.

What makes people think rats are going to leave your home to find water?

That's bloody great. Drunken rats on the kitchen sink asking for "a grass o' wafer"
