Jumbo jet successfully takes off after unexpected stopover at tiny US airport - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Controller: Giant 4241 heavy, confirm you know which airport you’re at.

Pilot: Well, we think we have a pretty good pulse.

Controller: Giant 4241 heavy, it appears you are at Jabara.

Pilot: Uh, say again?

Controller: Giant 4241 heavy, we saw the plane on the radar and it appears you are at Jabara airport.

How in the heck with all the technology these days does a pilot land not only at the wrong airport but doesn't notice he's landed on a runway around 1000 metres too short?

Jabara is north of the McConnell site with a similar approach. If the pilot just assumed the first airport he saw was the one he was looking for, he could have just dropped in on the wrong one before the ATC would actually see where he is going. IF not that one, he could have landed at Beech Airport, as well. That would have been even more fun.

Even with all the technology, pilots still rely on visual contact when possible. The guy is from big city and thinks, "Wichita, Kansas? How many airports can there be in Kansas?"

Fortunately, most planes can get by on less runway than they are spec'd for.

Nah I'm used to ultra light airstrips . You still have charts, and in something that big you'd think it would have a computer to say where you are.

We once had a herculies do a touch and go at our little strip ...........you'd want to be a bloody good pilot. (training I believe for airstrips in New Guinea)

I read the airstrip was short and on the pavement were long skid marks.

Hmm, suspect there were more, nobody wants to talk about.

Reuters has a film of the thing taking off from Jabara. kind of interesting. I tried to post a link to in but for some reason it failed to work., so I dropped it.

If t had been a passenger plane, I suspect the flight would have seen a long line for the restrooms for people to change they undies before they got to the next destination.
