Just love the name of this PG Wodehouse compilation of short stories because it conjures up such an assortment of possibilities of what it might be about.
Not to mention Joanna Southcott’s box!
Born at Taleford in 1750 and raised in the village of Gittisham in Devon England, she was a self-described religious prophetess. She claimed she was the woman spoken of in Revelation in the Bible …
You know the one … “And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.”
Well she left a sealed wooden box of prophecies, usually known as Joanna Southcott's Box, with the instruction that it be opened only at a time of national crisis.
Though Southcott’s followers deny it, it seems the box was opened and found to contain some unimportant papers, among them a lottery ticket and a horse-pistol.
Published in 1940 by Doubleday, Doran in New York. What a Marvellous Title!
