Police recover helmet of tragic Vic base jumper - Yahoo!7
I'm driving by the Omega tower the other week and see a van parked outside of it and think nothing of it because it's the holidays and we get a lot of tourists. No biggy. Then, later on I drive past again and there are a couple of amboes and police at the gate. Thinking they were planning something for the Australia day weekend thought nothing of it again. Then I find out just the other day some idiot decided to jump off the bloody thing. Oh dear, he was dying as I was driving past.
I read in the news report that authorities are going to increase security at the site. What security? A locked gate? If you don't want to pry the lock on the gate open just walk a couple of metres to the waste height fence and step over it
I'm having one of those 'shaking of the head' moments. There is a reason why it's illegal to jump off. And this boy found out the hard way.

They are looking at this all wrong.
They should charge for the privilege. A substantial deposit should be collected, 90% of which is refunded if you survive, and if you don't, the deposit covers the details of cleaning up after you.

23 years old.
Unfortunately many that age are not fully aware of their own mortality and take risks.
While you shake your head at his stupidity, there Is a Mother and Father out there grieving.

Also true. It's sad and unnatural for parents to lose their kids.
The kid though, must have been aware of what he was doing and that he was risking his life.

The only "stupid" part is the illegal thing. Of course were it not illegal, all sorts of idiots would be trying to climb up there and jump off.
The stupidity in my book is the work it would take to climb all the way up there, just to jump off.
I mean, I personally think it's stupid to jump off of really high places, anytime, but I am a chicken.
This guy died doing what he loved to do. What the hell is wrong with that. A lot of young people die doing a lot more stupid things than this.
Of course with a relatively short distance to fall, he would have had little time to think about what went wrong.

I have an old T-shirt that someone gave me. It says: "If at first you don't succeed, don't try skydiving!" With my luck, it would also apply to base jumping.
I'm glad the guy got to do what he loved doing and happy that no one on the ground was injured in his accident.

No, the bloke on the ground went over to the body, took away his helmet camera, then took off interstate to save his own skin. You know? "with friends like that" etc......

I'm not sure having your head pushed through your arse is dying doing what you love. I'm not even sure why the press made it out to be a "popular base jumping site" No it's not, wouldn't we have all hve seen the youtube clips? Most, in the 'ground to air' world know that it's not an ideal base jump facility. But it may become one now. They've already taken one omega tower down (Hawai?) this is another excuse to take this one down as well.
What will be interesting to know is, if the other bloke gets charged to interfering with a body, instead of "not reporting a body".
