With the CVS chain of drug stores announcing they will remove tobacco products from their shelves, I have to ask. What's the deal with trying to ban tobacco and at the same time pushing for the legalization of marijuana?

CVS bans cigarettes, but will others follow? - Feb. 5, 2014

That's the way they smoke it in England. Of course you don't need tobacco to smoke marijuana or hashish, I'm surprised to hear they still use that method.

Tobacco is proven to directly cause lung cancer, circulatory diseases, other cancers. It is not tobacco per se, it is the numerous additives put in. Also, nicotine is addictive, pot is not physically addictive. The average cigarette smoker does 20 per day, pot about 1-3 per day. Less inhalation.

Tobacco is more dangerous than pot, which really is not a dangerous thing, certainly less so than alcohol.

I don't understand "can't smoke dope without tobacco"?

Not sure why CVS would cut their revenue from tobacco and continue to sell alcohol?

I guess it's not a convenience store - most will go elsewhere.

Every ones trying to make a "Better America"

CVS is a Canadian based store/company - stay in Canada then.

I see what you're saying Anne, I guess people do smoke more cigarettes in a day than one would pot. I've always said that it's not the tobacco, it's all the stuff the cigarette companies put into it.

Patsy I was wondering that myself, they're getting rid of tobacco but keeping alcohol? People will just go buy tobacco products somewhere else. It's like I've always said since the whole anti-tobacco campaign started back in the 90's. If they get rid of tobacco hear in America, people will just buy their cigarettes on the black market. The government will lose out on all those taxes, and all of us who work in the tobacco industry will be out of a job.

The irony is that in California you can get a permit card for medicinal marijuana to help you quit smoking tobacco. :wah:

There's so many places to buy cigarettes, who needs CVS? You seem bothered by this?

Neither first nor second-hand marijuana smoke has been shown to cause cancer.

Seems like not too long ago smoking tobaco was seen as harmless, experts disagreed then, they disagree now.

You mean the experts now disagree on marijuana right? because I don't see anyone, even smokers, Not say that tobacco is dangerous.

Anne

I thought for sure I heard CVS was a Canadian Co. - doesn't matter

and yes, the Bieber can go back..:wah:

I'm bothered by restrictions - the anti & anti and making cuts for others.

You use to be able to order cigs by mail - gov't lost taxes and the mail orders were stopped.

If CVS wants to cut their revenue from selling cigs so be it - people will stop popping in to buy that 6 pack and a pack of cigs - they'll just go else where.

Wandrin

your right - I have friends with a medical marijuana card to stop smoking cigs.

Have they stopped smoking cigs? NO - but they love the marijuana and their smoking has decreased.

You got it, the marjuana experts who fund the research now might be as biased as the tobaco companies back then, what with the loss of revenue from tobaco sales.......presumably.

I'm a non-smoker.

Aside from heroin I would say that smoking tobacco is probably the most difficult habit to quit.

The use of marijuana and crack and heroin and other similar drugs has been illegal for a long time, yet they are readily available on the streets of most cities the world over.

Banning tobacco products will not stop people smoking just as prohibition did not stop people drinking.

I have yet to see a person under the influence of tobacco brought to court for causing a traffic accident and I'm sure that motor vehicles cause more deaths than tobacco.

First of all, fact is, breathing smoke damages lungs.

Habitual use of marihuana may or may not lead to lung cancer, though I fail to see where in the long run it is harmless.

I'll reserve my comments on habitual pot smokers, but to say it is a harmless activity is at best bogus.

First of all, in the world of second hand smoke, marihuana is far more dangerous than tobacco in that marihuana affects the victims sobriety.

The end of Prohibition was rightfully celebrated, since then we have experienced unnumbered alcohol related deaths and social misery.

Is Driving While High Dangerous? Fatal Car Accidents Involving Marijuana Triple Over 10 Years

Many pot smokers will tell you that driving under the influence of marijuana is actually safer than driving sober, their logic being that pot smokers tend to drive under the speed limit and use their paranoia to focus on the road. But new research is showing a darker side to the popular conviction that driving while stoned is no big deal.:-5:-5:-5

I have heard that pot though before. All to common.

According to a recent study of marijuana use and car accidents, fatal crashes involving people who were stoned have tripled over the last 10 years. The report, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, found that the incidence of car crash victims with pot in their systems jumped from 4.2 percent in 1999 to 12.2 percent in 2010.

"Currently, one of nine drivers involved in fatal crashes would test positive for marijuana," study co-author Dr. Guohua Li, director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at Columbia, told HealthDay. "If this trend continues, in five or six years non-alcohol drugs will overtake alcohol to become the most common substance involved in deaths related to impaired driving."

I don't buy the idea that driving while high is safe.

Anything that interferes with perception and reaction time increases danger while driving.

There are people who can drive better with relatively small amounts of alcohol in their blood. And I can see where the same might be true of other substances. But I would suggest that those people are in the minority of drinkers and smokers, and such.

And even lighting a cigarette while driving can distract a driver enough to contribute to the danger of having an accident.

I have always wondered why the government is so intent on attacking tobacco but they are perfectly fine with alcohol being legal. You don't hear of people crashing their cars and killing people from driving while smoking.

Well, they tried it, but Prohibition was an epic fail. People have been using alcohol for over three thousand years. ( I suspect over tens of thousands of years in prehistory.) Good or bad, it's definitely with mankind to stay for the long haul.

Interestingly, the strict DWI laws have basically stifled alcohol use and basically driven it underground in a "New prohibition." I heard of a guy in Texas getting arrested for public intoxication INSIDE a bar.

I like the final line:

Perhaps a more intelligent route toward healthful living would be to legislate a little something called “self-control.
