Book Rejections

As Dorothy Parker once said of a book: ““This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.â€
I’ve picked up a few that have made me feel the same way!
Beginning a new book is a venture that's usually accompanied with a sense of high expectations. It’s always fun to start reading a new book and I love it when I find one that I enjoy so much that it’s hard to put down. Those are the books you don’t want to end! Alas, there are also books that seem like they will NEVER end. Whether it be uninspired writing, uninteresting characters, a sleeper of a plot or whatever ... go away!
I used to feel obliged to slog my way through, doggedly determined to see it through to the bitter or not so bitter end. Maybe I was hopeful that it would pick up. Surprise! Sometimes they don’t and I’m left wondering what all the fuss was about!
These days I give a book ONE chapter and one chapter only to grab me and entice me to finish it. I don’t hurl them like Miss Parker but they’re definitely removed from sight!
Do you try to finish reading a book even if you don’t really like it? Does it matter if it’s a library book v/s a gift or book you bought? How far will you go into it before giving up and moving on to another? A chapter like me? Halfway through? Give up on the dust jacket description??
