There is sometimes a fine line between sanity and madness. Today's genius could easily be tomorrows lunatic. The human brain is the one organ in our bodies about which almost everything known today is purely guesswork. Sure a gifted brain surgeon can remove a tumour from a human brain or put a titanium clip into a vein to thwart an aneurism. But there isn't a single person alive today who can really tell me why I dream, or why I have more imagination than my sister or what happens to my brain when I sleep. Sure they guess at it but that's all it is ... guesswork,
I much prefer the 19th century concept (c1884 to 1889) which lays down definite guidelines for Reasons Why You Could Be Admitted To An Asylum ... No ifs and buts here ...

Only fifteen? Jeez you must be ever so slightly sane then! Unlike me ... Bad habits & political excitement would have got me every time!

Some of these don't even make any sense! OMG!! It looks like they could lock you away just for being a woman! I'm confused by some of them.....what does tobacco and masturbation have to do with one another?

Actually, in the mid 1800's they DID lock some women up, basically for being women.
As to your second question, perhaps we should ask Bill and Monica?

Interesting list. So, just about everything could be used as an excuse to lock someone up.

Such was life in (c1884 to 1889) the 19th century....be glad you live in these times. We all would have been committed!
