It would be nice to have an idea of what folks sound like as you're reading posts. What kind of accents to you all have?

Being from Virginia I have a southern accent. I tend to add a y sound into my words. LOL If I was saying I'm off to go to bed. It would sound like be-yid. :yh_rotfl

I grew up all over the country, and don't really have much of an accent, but I use a lot of Southern style words, and whenever I spend some time visiting my family in Georgia, I pick up that long, soft vowel sound they use, and it takes a while being back home for it to go away.

Yes there are some words that only those of us in the South say. I know some folks kinda catch an accent and it never completely goes away. :)

Patsy you must have an accent of some sort. LOL I also don't have a really high pitched voice. We have to think that ours voices are sultry and sexy like some of the old movie stars! :) I also have the kind of laugh that goes all over you. You sound like you would be a lot of fun to talk to. :)

well when I went on a trip to England, I stopped at Primark.

when I got to the till, the guy was talking to me and suddenly said: "You aint from round 'ere are ya? You speak dead posh like."

He was even more amazed when I told him I was born in England, but grew up in the north of Holland.

Anyway, my accent/voice changes depending on who I talk to.

At work, when I talk to customers, I start of soft spoken and I guess "posh".

Depending on their accent and how formel they are, I change my voice/accent slightly to theirs. It happens automatically, without me even thinking about it.

I once talked to a lady who came from Dublin and she had moved to Holland. Having problems with her internet connection, she called her provider. I picked up the phone, switched to English on her request.. My supervisors replayed that conversation many times.. they said it was amazing how my accent changed "irish" within seconds of speaking to this lady..

Somewhere in the archives is a thread we did, adding a wav file of our voices. It was a long time ago, maybe 2005 or 2006. I've no idea if it still exists.

It may have been Snooze who started the thread

Well here are several videos of members past and present, sorry no voice recordings though ............... perhaps somebody could organise a new audio thread for present members, and of course explain how to do it !

Forum garden members 2 - YouTube

Forum Garden members 3 - YouTube

FG Video Aug 2008 - YouTube

The girls - YouTube

As regards the audio recordings of members, perhaps Bryn could locate them as I don't think they're on Youtube, but they must surely be somewhere in the archives of Forum Garden.

I am from Florida, Al, Ga, Atlanta, and Wi. I have a thick southern accent that is wearing then ea. year that I live with the yankees.,

They call a buggy a cart, they call a bag bage, they think I am wierd because I say ya'll, yes in stead of teah. I say yes ma'am no ma'am yes sir no sir,

may I please, can I please, will you allowme to... Stuff like that. I also sound wierd when I am forming a sentence in my head and can't speak fast enough. I also stutter.

I was at a foot ball game and these people where swearing every other word I hated it. I was fine with the normalswears but once they started saying pu**y that and*USY that I flipped!

I screamed "could you please"..... whipped my head around to face them and stammered over saying "you uuuuse appropriatte language?

They said sorry and swore very little after ward.

Chloe I do something similar. When I'm dealing with something related to my business, I use what I call my business voice. I've had people ask me where was I from originally because I didn't sound local. When I'm talking to family or friends, the accent comes out more. :)

I would like to see how some ya Brits show up.

I am trying to copy the result for me to share.

My wife is from Colorado, and always gives me grief when I use Southern English.

I DO know better, of course. My mother's Aunts and Uncles were all teachers, and scholars. But I spent a lot time with my cousins and "poor relations" in North Georgia and Alabama, too. When I am relaxed among friends, it comes out in my speech. When I am working and with a customer or conducting business, My education holds sway.

I can talk right proper when I've a mind to.

The big problem with that (and I got the same result) is that so many of the answers were "other".

Hey Snooz that was very good. Unfortunately I had to play it several times to get what you were saying. I know it's difficult trying to cram so many words into about 5 seconds of recording time, but does anybody know how to extend that time to about 15 seconds? Also can anybody explain in simple form (please cos I'm thick ! :-5 ) how one can do a recording such as Snooz has done ? What do I need in the way of equipment yep I've got a mike, but I have forgotten how to actually do a recording of my voice (which may or may not be a good thing ! :wah: )

I've upped the limit to about fifteen seconds (3MB). Any modern laptop should have a mike built into it, on a desktop you'll probably have to plug your external mike in.

Oh that's much better, snooz ! Thanks ! Like that man said -"you must always remember to keep your vowels open " :wah: :lips: Yep that is really good. You have a very strong American accent ( to my sad little Brit. ears ) , so thanks for slowing your words down a little - made all the difference. You have a nice voice, it's quite mellow and easy to listen to ! I hope others will have a go cos it's nice being able to hear somebody for a change and be able to put a voice to a name ! :D

When you "reply to thread" click on "Go Advanced", scroll down and you'll see "Manage Attachemets". Within the page that brings up click on "Browse" and that will allow you to navigate to the folder your file is in and select it. Then click on "Upload" and wait until hte file hs been transferred before submitting your post.

I've had many a phone conversation with FG peeps... anyone want to ring me for a chat, I can call you In the USA evenings thanks to fee calls...

Anyway, I'll always remember the very first time I chatted with a certain FG member... we'd exchanged phone numbers and what we didn't realise was that we were phoning each other at exactly the same time...

So after hanging up because It was ringing off the hook, I realised I had a message on the answer machine. I put It on loud speaker and Peter and I were just open mouthed at this message...

It wasn't an actual message but the member talking to her husband as the machine kicked In.

All we got was, " **** It, every time I ******* ring, It's ******* busy. 3 ******* times now. That ******* stinks. What the ****'s going on. Oh **** It, ******* phone..

We just looked at each other and said ' yep, that must be ******

Can you guess the member?

Brit. or American ? I know who it probably was if you say it's American - she's got a mouth like a sewer and I haven't spoken to her for several years since she said similar stuff to me on MSN ! Her loss :yh_rotfl
