I'm not sure if anyone is aware but there is an additional feature on Google Earth that allows you to go back into time. There is an icon bottom left of the screen next to "tour guide". Mine says 1940.

Click this and it will take you back to 1940 and some subsequent years forward, on the area you are viewing ( provided of course the area had been surveyed and photographed then)

I have been viewing the area I grew up in the early 60's. Prefabricated buildings, built to temporarily replace homes that were bombed during WW2, that have long since gone, along with the adjacent ancient woods that I spent most of my days in. All gone !

Its a great feature. Very nostalgic

That is interesting. So it appears when there is some historical imagery available for a particular region as you zoom in, and displays the year of those available images. If more than one year are available, a slide bar can be found in upper left with years available.

Slick.

The particular area where I grew up as a young child has views from 1940, 1960, 1990, 1999, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2013

Even the earliest one is very good quality
