Did anyone else see the "Journey of Man" special on PBC last night. Scientist Spencer Wells traced the heritage of "Mankind" back for several thousand years through DNA. He traced "12" prime people that he said he thought started Mankind. He tracked down what he said were decendents of these prime 12, and tested their DNA. He said their DNA tests were able to linked between them. It was very interesting, and in his final findings he stated:

That all Mankind started from African heritage.

It all comes down to midochondria DNA. I doubt 12 people were involved. It has been proven that at least 32 separate DNA pairs are needed to make a non- inborn society. I think what you are talking about goes way back to the jungle - and that's OK. I doubt one "man walked out of the jungle as our ancestor - it had to be groups of people. There is not just one group of apes in the jungle - is there? How could we have ever gotten the genetic diversity with just a pair? If you think about evolution - there had to be diversified tribes of people who knew inbreeding was very very bad..

THis sounds very interesting, but seriously, (I`m not a scientist) wouldn`t we all be black? Also if I have the SAME DNA as murderers, rapists, etc, why aren`t I also inclined to be one? Just a query!

No, we would'nt all be black. I saw a program exactly like this a few months ago and it explained that as the African Bushman spread out and began to explore the land, some went west to Europe and some went East to Asia. As the two different groups adapted to their new climate, their physical appearence changed. Just like the Neanderthal's, they had big thick noses and skin to protect them from the extreme cold they faced during the later stages of the ice age. And, I think as far as the DNA being the same as murderers, that has to do with the brain. Chemical imbalences and self control is more logical than DNA deciding who's a murderer or not. No single DNA strand is the exact same, but the basic structure of DNA is all the same. Certain sections of DNA changes as time goes on as we continue to reproduce with different genetic elements. DNA can also be damaged through illnesses and teratogens during the birth stages.

I think this research is critical. It makes the whole idea of racism a moot point, doesn't it?

There'll still be a few bigots that will not only deny this research, but even turn their backs on Science and genetics, but they will become more and more of a minority as time goes by. After all, they wanted to burn Galileo at the stake when he proposed that the Earth travels around the Sun and is not the center of the Universe.

Has anyone tackled the question of how this research impacts the Bible and the Story of Creation? ;)

I think we probably ARE all from dark-skinned peoples. It's hard to say

anything on this subject without drawing fire though. I've tried to compose

something but give up each time out of concern I might upset someone.

Malcolm X maintained that Jesus was a black man. If I can dig out my

copy of his autobiography, I'll elaborate.

Yeah.....it's kind of funny.

Sometimes when kids ask me, "Is it true that we all came from Monkeys?" I tell them, "Actually, if you go back far enough, the first mammal was a small mouse-like shrew"

That knocks their socks off! :wah:

capt_buzzard wrote: Come on Valerie, please tell us;)Well, Cap'n, maybe Jives can help a little with this... but I just keep

thinking of a high school textbook (biology perhaps?) and the pics of

all those black rabbits and white ones. And a black rabbit and a white

one will have so many black AND white and so many all-black etc.

Wish I had paid more attention but the gist of it is that "black" is a

dominant gene and "white" is recessive. Over many many years, there

could be eventually a "white" person come from lighter and lighter

skinned "blacks", but never get a "black" person from "whites".

I think also what needs to be considered is the area of the earth that

darker skinned humans came from. The skin was protection from the

sun. Somewhat, don't everybody jump on me that blacks can get sunburn,

I know they can. But when these early humans migrated to the colder

climes, without a lot of sun, the need for protection wasn't there any

more.

:yh_sighA friend of mine who was born in SA came here in the early 1960s.Today he looks pale compared to other South Africans.

do with HUMANS. Or birds, or fish, or flowers.

Some things in all of us are the same, of course. Some things are very

different.

Our blood is all the same, and I don't care WHERE all the blood I've

donated the last 33 years goes. It goes to a HUMAN. Be that human

"black" or "brown" or "white" or "RED" or Goth, ferhevvinsakes.
