An old bit of 'sculpture'

For TBT: This is not an old pic, but it's a very old item, so I say it counts! Carved by my father from a bar of Ivory soap. He put the date on the back, unfortunately the last numeral broke off at some point, but since he went in the Marines at age 16, my best guess is that this is slightly pre-War. (He used a nickel as his model!)

Before I read what it was, I was thinking it was something like a piece of Mayan art.

Pre-"what" war?

Trivia: "The Buffalo nickel or Indian Head nickel was a copper-nickel five-cent piece struck by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938."

They have been in circulation for a long time. In the fifties, they were still fairly common. I remember seeing them regularly even into the sixties.

Chloe, I have only had it for a little over a year, it was an exciting find while clearing out

my deceased sister's storage unit.

Tude, I can see how you thought that, it almost looks like stone, and the color sort of

fits, too!

HT, pre WW II is what I meant. Dad was born in 1926. The date he carved in the back says

"Made in 194(missing) and his name he carved as "Bobby" which I doubt he would have used

after becoming a Marine! Lars is right, there were a lot of those nickels around for a long time.

They should all be in coin collections today.

I have several very fine pieces in my collection.

They are still quite common, and you will find many that have been turned into jewelry pieces.

These that were made of copper-nickel were manufactured only until 1938 Lars, but the ones made of wood continued to be produced many, many years afterwards.

Only nickels. Ask Lars. I'm sure he can tell you. :)

I vaguely remember the phrase now - "Don't Take Any Wooden Nickels". It was only when I Googled it & saw the Wikipedia article on it that I realised that they were real (albeit not official tender).
