Another unfortunate event made far bigger than it should have been by media coverage.

It's the fault of the district commander who wanted arrest for very petty crimes. Garner should have been issued a ticket. Go after those who hijacked the untaxed cigarettes, not the poor schmuck selling them loose. If a suspect says "I can't breathe" 11 times & other officers have arrived on scene, Garner was not going anywhere. Yet, the officer continued the same hold. I wasn't present in the Grand Jury so that is all I will say for now.

I appreciate your in put Anne. You are closer to the case then the rest of us.

I would say it was the fault of the officer with the choke hold on that didn't have the brains to realise he was actually choking the person he was holding. If a bouncer at a night club or any other private individual did that during a fight they would be charged with involuntary manslaughter at the very least (or whatever the american equivalent is).

If properly applied, the chokehold can render a person unconscious fairly quickly, and without doing any damage. It was, however a forbidden tactic in the New York PD, and the officer was punished for it.

The cop was doing it wrong, which resulted in the guy's death.

I am mostly disturbed by the way the media continues to fan the flames of racism with these events. Yes, there is a problem, still, with racial attitudes in this country. And yes, a disproportionate number of blacks and Hispanics are arrested and jailed, and killed in this country, while too many white criminals walk the streets with impunity.

But the media is not helping the problem a bit.
