Why is a Yawn infectious?

Why is it that just thinking about a yawn can make you yawn?

Why is it that trying not to yawn makes you yawn all the more?

What is the purpose of a yawn anyway?

I find I yawn a lot after I've been feeling particularly anxious and over breathing. For me, I think it's a way of balancing my breathing.
