hello and welcome to another column

now some say im harsh some controversial and others just dont bother

but i believe you should tell it how it is please or offend.

Organisers of the Clifton Suspension Bridge anniversary display confirmed that the show will go ahead on Sunday.

A minute's silence will be held to mark the tragic death of Charlotte Bevan and her baby, Zaani Tiani, who died within the shadow of the bridge this week The announcement comes after calls to postpone or cancel the anniversary show, in light of the sad events of this week.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust made the following announcement on Friday afternoon: “Over the last 48 hours, Trustees have carefully reviewed the suitability of holding a celebratory firework display so soon after the tragic death of Charlotte Bevan and her baby daughter Zaani just a short distance from the bridge. Having thought very deeply about this, it is felt that the planned event should go ahead.

“The loss of Charlotte and Zaani, as well others who have previously died in the Avon Gorge, will be marked by a minute of quiet and reflection prior to the start of the firework display at 7:00pm.

“We will set up a collection with the proceeds going to a charity, which we hope to discuss with Charlotte’s family at an appropriate time.

Ms Bevan, 30, died this week after leaving St Michael's Hospital on Tuesday night with her four-day-old daughter.

The fireworks show is expected to attract thousands of spectators, and is being put on to mark the bridge's 150th anniversary.

yes this is a very tragic story and a nice thought for a mother who was let down by the system.

hospitals are not prisons you cannot lock up a a patient and to be honest there is nothing that realisticly can be done to prevent you leaving hospital with your child.

this mother was let down by the system as she was a schsophrenic

and really should not have been allowed into society and should have been put away untill she was deemed fit to re enter society let alone get pregnant unfortunately some slip through the net and this was a classic case of a net with a big hole in it but my sympathy stops there.

to be honest if charlotte bevan wanted to end her life that is her affair the system can only do so much.

she effectively murdered her child as she jumped deliberately with her baby in her arms yet there is to be a minutes silence in her honour which

personally is wrong.. have the silence by all means but dedicate it to that 4 day old child who didnt get a say in wether she should live or die.

Don't have a miniutes silence for the mother then if it upsets you so much - People commit suicide and kill their children for all sorts of reasons rational free will and choice usually doesn't come in to it.

yes my comments may be harsh but no one forced her to leave the hospital where she could have got help no one forced her to walk 1.5m to clifton gorge no one forced her to climb the rail and no one forced her to jump where as the baby had no choice she took away the babys chance of a first christmas , an education, growing up, marriage and children of her own by her mothers selfish deed.

I have to agree In the main with Andy Grumpy person.

On one hand, the woman was mentally Ill and she was failed by the authorities and I believe more attention and Investment Is needed In the mental health arena. Certainly, If she was mentally unstable, her pregnancy and birth should have been closely monitered. Social Services can be very quick to remove new born babies when It suits, so she was failed.

In this case, I'd lay the blame solely on the Social Services.

On the other hand, hospital staff are underpaid and over worked. No way should they be held accountable for the woman walking out the door. They are not paid to act as Doormen.

The woman whether mentally unstable or not chose to end her life and that of her baby. It's very tragic and not something I take lightly. I live In Bristol and It was heartbreaking to see the police on the Clifton Cliffs recovering the babies body... Yet, a nation can not baby sit every person In their community when someone makes a bad choice and they certainly should not be made to feel guilty about a complete stranger who died due to authorities failings.

Can you imagine what it must be like to suffer from a serious mental health issue? Does anyone seriously think that you would be able to make a rational, well considered decision whilst in the grips of a schizophrenic/psychotic episode?
