Tony Blair has questioned the value of democracy in the Middle East saying “effective government is more important - amid reports that he is preparing to step down from his high-profile role as peace envoy to the region
I expect the Middle East is relieved.

I can imagine little that would make a bigger oxymoron that "Tony Blair, Middle East Peace Envoy" so I expect that more than just the Middle East are relieved.
Having said that, he is right - you cannot replace "effective government" with an externally imposed democracy. The result will always be a power vacuum and total instability.
Why the West keeps on trying to do it I do not know - even less do I understand why they are repeatedly surprise3d by the outcome!

It's much like that you can't take someone's rights away - they have to be given. The rights here seem to be the right not to have rights. If that's the system of Government they prefer, who are we to say otherwise. After all, is that not what democracy is all about?

Funny. It seems that was the type of argument used to support the Nazis in Germany.
But, yeah, I suppose you could let people vote for an authoritarian government and then live with the consequences.
At times that is what seems to be happening here.
I don't think democracy will EVER be known for it's efficiency.
I rather like a messy, cluttered, and sometimes inept government, myself.
