Hungary said Tuesday it has indefinitely suspended the application of a key EU asylum rule in order "protect Hungarian interests", prompting Brussels to seek immediate clarification.

The rule requires a migrant's claim to be processed in the EU country they first arrive in, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.

But it will be suspended as "the boat is full," Zoltan Kovacs told Austrian media, referring to the recent influx of migrants.

The strain is showing.

I wondered when this would start to happen. When the world was young, countries wanted more people for a bigger workforce, more manufacturing and more agriculture. Those days are over, the planet has plenty of people, Way too many in fact.

I'll bet we'll see more countries "close" in the future.

While many citizens of Western Europe don’t seem particularly enthusiastic about taking in the refugees fleeing war and poverty in Syria, the crisis has provoked a remarkably strong wave of xenophobia and Islamophobia in the countries of Central Europe.

They have been isolated for far too long.
