Police in northern Germany have seized a World War Two tank which was being kept in a pensioner's cellar.

What is it with Germans and cellars ?

He should have emigrated to the UK, it's entirely legal to own a German World War Two tank and keep it in your cellar. Or garage, or front lawn.

He only hid it in the cellar because he was breaking the law and didn't want anyone to know. Owning the tank had been criminalized in Germany. Change the law, make it legal and there's no crime and no need to keep it hidden.

What's wrong in this story is the law, not the tank.

Strange comment.

What is wrong in this story is the fact that anyone feels the need to own a tank sooooo much, they put it in their cellar, thereby negating it's usefulness, if usefulness is the right word.

Perhaps it would be legal if it were to be disable as a weapon? This might filling a section of the barrel with molten metal, as has been done in the UK with a lot of display pieces.

That would make it legal in the UK, but not in Germany. It's the "World War Two Weapon" bit that makes it illegal over there, not the "Still Goes Bang" bit.

The rules in England are variably applied. The main turrets on HMS Belfast haven't been disabled, for example, but whoever now owns it isn't due to appear in court.
