She has refused to issue licenses to same-sex couples and has now been jailed for contempt of court over the issue.

Personally, I figure that if you cannot, in good conscience, do the job you are being paid to do, for whatever reason, you should give it up and go find something that fits your sensibilities.

The progressive way to look at it is as "civil disobedience". Sound more acceptable?

I have a grudging admiration for her, at the same time think she is barmy.

The fact that the rules have changed since she took the job is her only defence.

According to that article she has refused to issue any licences to any couples, gay or straight, since the Supreme Court ruling, so is not doing her job, sack her.

A lack woman refusing to give up her seat to a white man is civil disobedience a christian refusing to issue a marriage licence to a mixed race couple or a same sex one is not civil disobedience it's bigotry. They have a god given right to be gay what arrogance to assume the right to speak for god. Well if I was religious I might say something like that.

The reason she should have resigned on a matter of conscience is that she could no longer do the job she was being paid to do. Either she follows her conscience or she does her job. What she can't do is continue in office while refusing the obligation it entails.

She doesn't want to resign an $80K a year job. She thinks she is right, so why should she quit? Fire her.

If she's elected to the office then jailing her for not resigning or performing it is entirely proper. If she wants a fight, she'll lose. But then she'll make her million on the lecture circuit afterwards. And some evangelical outfit with more money than sense will make a totally inartistic biopic and that'll be another million.

County Clerk is an elected position in many states.

So the only way she can get fired is for the county residents to have a recall vote, or for the County commission to decide to remove her.

She also claims that none of her subordinates have been given the authority to issue licenses, either. This could get really ugly.

Most Christian fundamentalists would absolutely deny that Jesus might have had sexual relations with women. And they'd be hard put to claim he never kissed any of his male friends or wore a mustache and sandals. So why they think he'd disapprove of two chaps setting up home together I can't imagine. The world missed a great movie when they didn't get Burt Reynolds to play Christ, that's what I reckon.

When I was heavily involved in the church and had just left a drunken family it was hard for me to be a waitress and serve alcohol, so I just gave my two weeks and said I couldn't do my job. And at the time i too blindly believed whatever the church said and whatever interpretations I made the bible say. Rot away! This is what comes when you let bureaucrats get elected into office. They can't get fired, no matter how badly they do their job for their term of office. They are Civil Servants, and if they were employed as such they would be sacked for Gross Misconduct & they wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Whether she likes it or not, the right of Gay Marriage is a legal one, and it is not up to her to decide whether she wants to abide by that law or not. There are still those who disagree with the emancipation of slaves, but you can bet your bottom dollar that if someone decided to enslave a few local blacks because they don't agree with their rights there would be Hell to pay. Ok, a bit of an extreme example, but the principle is the same. You cannot cherry pick which laws you want to obey & claim religious exemption whenever you don't like one of those laws.

I believe in the UK that if an MP (or any other elected official) is convicted of a criminal offence during their term of office, then they lose that seat, or at least the seat comes up for re-election. Perhaps that could be an option in the US?
