UPDATED: 5:17 pm EDT June 10, 2005

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. -- Officials urged people in low-lying areas of Escambia County to evacuate Friday as a rainy, strengthening Tropical Storm Arlene headed for a weekend landfall on the northern Gulf Coast, an area still recovering from Hurricane Ivan nine months ago.

Arlene could strengthen into a weak hurricane before hitting land Saturday afternoon, forecasters said. Many residents seemed to be taking no chances, as hardware stores said generators, flashlights and other hurricane supplies were in high demand.

Six hurricane shelters were being opened in the Florida Panhandle.

The voluntary evacuation also applies to mobile homes, manufactured housing and travel trailers such as those provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to Ivan's victims who are waiting for their homes to be repaired or rebuilt.

yes it should have been Agnes as that is my middle name after my grandmother Agnes who lived in Florida for many years. But Arlene seems to be a better name. Now people might name their daughters born during the storm Arlene. :)

i don't know if anyone here is in harm's way, but tonight the panhandle counties were urged to evacuate. ........TW i understand the fascination with wild storms. but i have to say, the miami area looked like hiroshima after andrew, my cousin lost her baby, and my aunt lost her house and everything she ever owned in the world. every family photo and memento. she has never been the same since and she lived in Berlin during WWll. some people were born and raised here and have careers here, it's not like they say "oh i want to live in hurricane country".

Ivan Victims Making Plans For Arlene As Storm Heads For Panhandle

UPDATED: 8:13 am EDT June 11, 2005

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. -- Tropical Storm Arlene plodded toward the northern Gulf Coast early Saturday, making weather-weary residents even more nervous knowing they were under a hurricane warning.

The warning stretched from Pascagoula, Miss., to Destin in the central Florida Panhandle, and inland communities also braced for a hit. By early Saturday sustained winds of 46 mph -- with one gust of 69 mph -- were recorded near Apalachicola, Fla., on the Panhandle's southern tip.

At 8 a.m. EDT, the storm -- becoming somewhat less organized, forecasters said -- was 105 miles south-southeast of Mobile, Ala., and meandering toward the north-northwest at 15 mph.

"This motion should bring the center of Arlene near or over the northern Gulf Coast later today or tonight," Jack Beven, a specialist with the National Hurricane Center, said early Saturday.

Forecasters said Arlene could build into a Category 1 storm by landfall, with its heaviest winds and rains east of the storm's center.

Good mornin' LC... glad this is on the other side of Florida from you.....

I get mail every morning from my girlfirend in Ft. Lauderdale...which I am assuming wouldn't get the brunt of this rain coming down...although she say's they're having alot of thunder storms. Jeeze.......I alway's have to get a map of Florida to figure out what's happening where!

Tell you what......we get news of what's happening in Florida in OUR Southern CA newspapers every day which I think is very cool! :D

Take care........
