Just received this news today ! What a success ! Mind you these International companies should not need to be persuaded to protect nature, but unfortunately money matters an awful lot more than saving our wonderful creatures from extinction, it seems.

Unfortunately this world needs international groups like Greenpeace, and I feel privileged to be a part of this brave and committed group. OK it's only a tiny part, but I'm too old to do anything like climb buildings and tie banners. If I was in my 20s or 30s I would be one of their physical activists, believe me ! As it is, I can sign petitions and contribute a bit of money every so often. I just wish I was able to do more. It seems that Greenpeace is the only group fighting for the earth's survival .............................................................

Hi Gill,

Heart-stopping moment: Shell just announced they will stop drilling for oil in the Arctic!

The Guardian reports today that on top of rising costs, “Shell has privately made clear it is taken aback by the public protests against the drilling which are threatening to seriously damage its reputation.

Three long years of campaigning, one incredible summer of action, and 7 million of us around the world in a rising global movement for the Arctic - just, wow!

Let's just hope the Russkies don't jump in to fill the gap! Still, it's good news that international public pressure can yield worthwhile results!

Shell is only one of several companies with their eyes on Arctic oil. But I suspect that there was a lot of money considerations, as well, given the meager oil prices we are seeing.

However, we will take the good news as we find it.

Might I put a question?

Where, if not the Arctic, do posters think Shell should drill for oil?

I think it is time we weaned ourselves from the stuff. But if they insist, then they should continue to drill where they have been for the last hundred years.

The logistics of extracting oil from Arctic and Antarctic regions will continue to make the stuff prohibitively expensive.

I'm waiting for Gill to say they should stop drilling everywhere, it which point I'll ask her another question. You could idle away a moment or two in trying to guess what that might be.

There are plenty of alternatives available! One obvious alternative to refining millions of tons of oil into polluting petrol, is to run combustion engines on GAS. If we only used oil for lubrication, we would have enough for several centuries at least, and would seriously reduce pollution, to boot!

Scoff all you like, but we NEED to seriously 'up our game' in this department.

We simply cannot continue on as we have been doing indefinitely.
