When might one employ a hyphen

Post by spot »

Working with scientists at Durham University and an ancient DNA lab at McMaster University in Canada, museum researchers were able to reconstruct the DNA of four individuals.

DNA study finds London was ethnically diverse from start - BBC News

Presumably, with better funding they'd have hired a more modern DNA lab.

Well, I can't imagine a new city just cropping up, and all of the citizens being natives from the get-go..

There were black africans in britain before there were any english, normans or saxon - a great point to make if you like winding up BNP member when you meet them.

Saint maurice patron saint of soldiers, swordsmiths, armies, and infantrymen

was a black roman commander martyred for refusing to slaughter rebelliuos christians in gaul - had no problem slaughtering pagans though. He bacame white in the middle ages as the church started looking for ways to justify black slavery. It's not just americans who can't see irony - maybe it's because they are so religious?

Ideally between "ancient" and "DNA", making "an ancient-DNA lab at McMaster University".

Yeah, I was wondering about just how old that DNA lab might be.

Only to an extent. Technically, perhaps. It didn't strike me so at the time.

To broaden the confusion, I note that if ForumGarden is inclined to expand its Pacific operation we might consider entering a bid for the South China Morning Post which would seem to be up for sale this week.

I would, if asked, commend the notion.

Pah. We didn't act in time.

Alibaba to buy Hong Kong's South China Morning Post - BBC News

We need to act faster if we're to expand aggressively.

I'm with you, Bruv, on this. I haven't the faintest clue what anybody is talking about, let alone if there is anything to do with the use of a hyphen ! On the face of it, it seems one or two members have lost the plot !!!

I wonder whether post#6 caught your eye in passing.

I think it's all about our lack of attention at school Gilly, I missed that lesson........about the use of hyphens I mean.

It doesn't matter much in the circles in which I move, but I am often happy to admit my ignorance and move on.............cos it doesn't really matter.

Mentioning an aberrant hyphen in the thread title brought to mind the unintelligible BBC links thread...........but it hooked us in, and now we all know about the early ethnic make up of the original inhabitants of London..........so misleading titles do work.

And now we know a little bit more about hyphens too........which can't be bad can it ?

Well I read it but could not understand why one should put a hyphen where you have put it ! Is there need for a hyphen there ?

If you say so, Bruv. Mmmmm I think I must have missed the lesson on hyphens too. But, as you say, what does it matter? I think it is more important to not get into the habit of spelling words phonetically.

We missed Washington Post to be sold earlier this week too. Admittedly I didn't see that one coming.

We might need to put in a more aggressive takeover bid if we want to get anywhere. The Los Angeles Times, anyone?
